1998 Mountaineer
I'm getting a 1997 Mountaineer with a running 302 and bad transmission, as a potential parts donor. $500 with nice aluminum wheels and a set of tires with only 800 miles on them, plus it just had all new brakes and rotors front and rear before low/reverse went out in the transmission.

The rear axle in my early 1998 Mountaineer has decided to get in the spirit of Halloween by howling like mad. Are there any issues with swapping the axle from a 1997 Mountaineer? ABS tone rings and sensors the same? They're both 3.73 limited slip.

As for the rest of the 97, unless a 98-01 falls in my lap for cheap, I'm going to rip apart the 02 Sport Trac and transplant all the wiring under dash and under hood from the 97. Will be a bit of a job but since it appears something has broken in the engine, it needs to come out anyway.

I've had it with the mish-mash melding of Mountaineer and Sport Trac stuff not working properly. The ABS hasn't worked since the swap, not even after installing a NOS 1998 Mountaineer ABS module/pump unit. The rear window has never worked, even when the Trac was all original (the reset procedure did nothing). Can't program new key fobs. Had two working but one somehow got 'lost' from the system. Since I found and replaced the cracked EGR pipe it had been running better, until it suddenly died.

It's going to get new bearings, rings etc so the engine will be freshened up. Might rebuild the AWD transfer case too. It has a speed sensor hole on the transfer case so if that's needed for the 97 stuff I can just install it. Right now it's plugged with a sensor that's been gutted and filled with plastic resin. (One more thing the dope-head who did the swap broke.)

As for the rear window (so stupid to have it computer controlled) I'm going to see if I can put together a direct control system, switch to motor, like it should have been originally. Might see about getting fancy so pushing it makes it open to a vent position.

The 97 uses the trans VSS signal for the PCM etc, did the 97 also have the rear ABS sensor on the diff, like 98+? That ABS sensor is the only thing I'm fuzzy on for the 97 down diff.

I don't recall your other vehicle details, is you 98 a 302, AWD, same gearing etc? The 302 gears are usually 3.73's at that time, the V6's varied more.

If you don't need the rest of the 97 wiring, which 302 heads does it have, and can I get that engine/trans harness from you? I still need at least one more of the early 97 wiring(normal GT40 heads, not the P with EGR pipe).

Haven't brought the 97 home yet. Going to rent a dolly and go get it tomorrow. I don't know the date on it. When in 97 did the GT40P heads start?

The axle will be going into the early 98. The plan for the wiring etc and the engine is to use them to redo the 02 Sport Trac so it'll be 100% Mountaineer stuff, thus will work properly. I'd rather have found a 99 to 01 with a bad trans for cheap, but $500 is less than what the tires on it cost.

Who knows what'll happen between now and springtime, when the weather will be better for tearing apart two vehicles.

What weather, it'll be 70 tomorrow?
