Why rear mount an engine that would easily mount under the hood? Besides the serious fabrication, and added expense, You'd lose enclosed space. You'd be in cab with a loud, hot, and stinky motor. You'd need a snorkel, or at least to run with the windows down, since a motor uses a huge amount of air. You'd likely need to cut holes in the roof, and mount the radiator, and fan outside. Your center of gravity would be considerably higher. Your front drive traction would be nil. You'd need custom heavy weight leaves, and ligher springrate coils up front. Power brakes would be difficult. You'd need a huge hole cut in the floor for the transmission which would be hard to seal dust out. Off the top of my head those are a few things to make it not worthwile. I'm sure while trying to tackle something like that a whole other host of problems would arise.

The only pro I can even almost justify is that it would be "different" To me for the money and work involved you could do somethign a lot more practical/cool.

unless it was porsche, i wouldnt consider it. The radiotor lines as well as steering lines etc will be a pain in the ass, let a lone the wiring you will have to do. a pro would be it would be different, other than that i dont see any

are you lookin to make a mudbogger? Is so, go for it, if not, why the heck would you want to do that.

What prompts people to ask questions like this?

If anyone would do it, it would cost alot of $$ & time.

well a pro would be more weight in the back allows for great traction. front trunk space would be killer. you could lose some weight by chopping off part of the back body that the motor sits on. go for it!

Someone has already done this. There are photos in a thread somewhere. The truck is a monster truck based on an Explorer frame and body.

Sounds like a serious project! Go for it!!!

I dont see anything wrong with making an off road beast with a trans axle and mid mounted V8? Hell yes!
Trophey trucks typically use this setup.

Whats the truck going to be used for?

prerunner and mudder??? talk about oppsites.

Besides the cost and time i dount care its going to be done no matter what.

so a 4x4 locked, long travel desert truck with a snorkel and waterproofing :)

How are you going to do a mid engine with a transfer case? this would be my first question.
I see a transaxle as an easy way to mount the V8 in the back with a 2wd but how is this done with a 4x4???

i figured that i mount the engine facing backwards, that way i can rig something up for it. but as of what i havent thought of yet. i got about 4 people right now all trying to figure a way to do so. But couldnt it allso work if you just turn it around?

sounds to me like a Jesse James project... more like Monster Garage style. Sometime people just do things nobody did before. Go for it.

if you turn the engine around...other then the intake and exaust being in weird spots it would be front wheel drive....and the 4 with the trasfer case.

theres a ranger with a 460 mid ship engine with 44 boggers down here.....pretty cool rig....so it is more than possible to do

if you turn it around, wouldnt all of the drives be in reverse, and reverse is drive?

What about just modifying the firewall and pushing the 5.0L back into the cab a good 2'?

How do 4x4 trophey trucks run a mid ship engine or do they?
