Recall???

Anyone know / able to find out what range of manufacture dates this recall affects? I'm compiling a shopping list of TSB's to get done in one dealer visit - already got tin roof drum and weird tailgate behaviour to sort.

Jimmy....I assume that you are referring to only the TSB's that your vehicle has experienced?
The dealer won't simply fix all (or any) of the TSB's unless you have experienced any (or all) of the issues with your vehicle....That is likely why some dealers are hesitant to do anything unless they can "reproduce" the issues. My dealer says that there are way too many people that go on these forums and the minute they find out about a TSB, they think the dealer should automatically perform the fix even though their vehicle hasn't experienced the issue. Also, the chances of the dealer having all of the required parts for all of the TSB's in your "one" visit are slim to nil.....they likely have to order some in and some times they can be on back order as well.......

No, this is in addition to the TSB that was published last year.
I for one got a mailer on Friday from the dealership saying that FoMoCo has issued a recall for my vehicle and that the recall number is 12B36. Altghough once I login into www.owner.ford.com, there is no "official" recall for my vehicle.
I think the confusion is that FoMoCo is calling this a "field action" while the dealership is calling it a "recall".

Jimmy, my build was mid Feb 2011.

Picked up the Explorer from the dealer. They were great and even though they couldn't reproduce the squeal, they replaced the fans under the TSB.:thumbsup: They also did the reprogram but the service advisor didn't have any additional information other than "cooling fan strategy."

Yeah, but I had a hope that it was an actual part replacement and that I we would not have to deal with this ticking time bomb.
I though that the cooling fans were being replaced because they were actually failing, not because of faulty software programming, maybe it's a combination of both.
I still wonder if this re-program will avoid overheat conditions in the future

I guess its possible that the PCM was overdriving the fans causing early failure of the fans.

Yeah, could be, but I guess we will never know!
FoMoCo hasn't been straightforward explaining for example why we had to take some early builds into the dealership for MFT update, the funny thing is we think we figured out is was because of the potential overheat condition, thanks to the collective knowledge/information of this forum

Any of the FORD contact's would like to comment regarding:

I wonder if this reprogram was done as part of Dealer Required MFT Upgrade??

I wonder if this reprogram was done as part of Dealer Required MFT Upgrade??
These came out at separate dates, several weeks ago I went to mandatory dealership MFT update and then just last week this additional field action
#12B36 came out.

I had the MFT update done on March 29th by the dealer. I called today to schedule an appointment for an oil change and inquired about this Field Service Bulletin. They looked up my VIN and stated that I am one of the owners that this bulletin 12B36 applies to. They will do it when I go in for my oil change next week. I told them to put the "rain noise" TSB on hold for now after having read some of the posts. I'm going to re-evaluate.

Just received my letter today for our 2012 Limited.
It's being labeled as a "Customer Satisfaction Program 12B36"
Issue: contamination can build up on the internal electrical contacts of the engine cooling fan motors causing the fans to be inoperative.
The dealer will inspect and replace fans if necessary and reprogram the Power Control Module (PCM) to prevent contamination from accumulating in the future.
-Interesting...a reprogram to prevent contamination...

Same thought came to mind when I read your post. Maybe they are going to spin faster??:dunno:
I'm getting mine done this week (Thursday).

Just recieved my letter in the mail today regarding this "Customer Satisfaction Program"

Since I will be going back next week for a new headliner and seat cover, I'll have them look into this at that time.

I got this in the mail today. My cooling fans seem to be working fine, especially since I've been driving the Explorer harder than I should, never went passed the middle of the temp gauge. Fans seem to be working fine but I hardly turn on the A/C.

I want to know how does a PCM upgrade prevent accumulation in the fans? That's just odd.

Joined forum so I could warn folks. My 2012 explorer with 6k miles overheated during sinc upgrade. Had towed to dealer that explained cooling fan recall.

My wife's did the exact same thing. Luckily the dealer was doing the upgrade not me, so he already had the car. Just don't know how long it was running "hot" before they noticed it.

Interesting thing, 12B36.

So My MFT upgrade letter (without USB) showed up on Tuesday, after I had had already scheduled the service with my dealer. We had lunch and swapped vehiclesso he could have the MFT upgrade, A Pillar TSB, and Roof TSB (He bought lunch - gave me a Jeep Grand Cherokee to drive - did I ever say I have the best dealer in the world!:))

And then lo and behold, yesterday in the mail I get a separate letter telling me about the cooling fan failure/internal contact contamination/PCM reprogram.

When I got it back (delivered to my parking garage and swapped vehicles back :)) I noticed the invoice also mentioned 12B36, but called it "Sync Install". I didn't think anything of it til I saw the letter yesterday. Now it makes sense.

So, I'm wondering if the initial fan production run had motor brushes that got gunked up, and then the fans wouldn't start. Maybe the PCM modification makes them run every now and then to keep them clean?

But any way it goes, nice move Ford for not being honest with your customers on the whole reason why we couldn't do the USB install ourselves.

And my satisfaction with MFT v3? I'll post that in the IVT thread. Suffice it to say it has a big ol' glitch in it tied to the BT. I'm thinking if Ford would have let more people Beta test it, they might have found it. Hmmm, where did anyone suggest that?

I don't think that 12B36 has anything to do with Sync. It is related to the cooling fans.
I also would think that the fans run on a fairly constant basis once the engine reaches operating temperature, especially in warm/hot weather.
The MFT Performance Upgrade directive posted on this Forum did say why certain Explorers had to go to the dealer for the upgrade. It was so that the cooling fans could be set to run at a higher speed.
I'm getting 12B36 done this week when I bring the Ex in for an oil change. I'll see what they say about it.
