'99 XLS V6 OHV
'99 OHV, had for almost five years now. Always been a strange rumble, intermittently, between 35-40 mph or so, feels like it's right underneath me while I'm driving. Goes away if I let off the gas at that speed. No effect if I turn off the overdrive, that was my initial thought since that speed gets pretty close to locking up the torque converter. I've been underneath checking for loose heat shields, bad U-joints, loose exhaust hangers, etc., everything seems rock solid. I've had a new transmission installed in the years I've owned it, still makes that noise. Just seeing if anyone else has had a mysterious rumble at this speed.

Can’t remember off the top of my head, but I don’t know for sure if selecting OD OFF also inhibits TCC lockup…

That speed is pretty classic for TC shudder in the 4R70W anyway, not sure about your trans. Feels like rumble strips.

is it rpm base or speed base? around there i think the trans is in 4th (?) either that or 3rd. in the video i have of driving this X at 45 it seems the TC locked, but this was on an area with some slight hills so its not liek flat ground, wouldve locked earlier probably. under lockup it dropped to 2k. if it locked earlier its probably around 1.5 k ish. not necessarily an X, but frontier has been doing that at low rpm it bogs slightly and then rumbles. thinking its just the tc, but not sure.

though from the video and what i remember i dont recall this X doing that, however. by the time it drops low im either off the pedal or its coast downshifting

Are all four tires same brand and size, with even tread wear?

The cv joint on the transfer case end of front drive shaft will cause these symptoms when worn.

2wd truck so no transfer case. Lots of new front end parts including wheel bearings. It's pretty well sorted out. Gave an employee a ride to work today and he asked me about the noise, and I just said "that's what this thing sounds like when you go this fast". I'm going to look into the torque converter shudder, I have a "new to me" transmission in it with about 80k miles. It's still under warranty!

Brand new identical tires and recent alignment.

i have the same thing between 30 and 40 once i hit 40 it goes away ands its been like this for almost 10k miles

You really need to drop the driveshaft to check u joints well. You might find one is real floppy and loose.

Also, if you have a 2 piece rear drive shaft, the slip yoke splines in the center need lubed once in a while.

I just put on new tires and they are loud really loud

which ones? the AS ones seem really quiet these days.
Amazon product ASIN B08G6MZQT2
The last set I had of these relatively quiet
these ones seemed to be a little bit louder
this set has a higher max pressure rating 51 psi Canada.....louder ..I don't like them
Last set max pressure of 40 made in Mexico ..... quiet...till they wore out

usually the load rating or tread depth? that made. noise difference in some sets.

I'll drop that driveshaft when it gets warm and really check out the U-joints. The story on this thing seems to be that it's made it this far on original parts, so I wouldn't be surprised if it needs them done. Just seems so weird that it's in that speed range.

dont bother i put on brand new moog ujoints and still have the rumble

When was the last time you changed the fluid in this trans?

80k miles on rebuilt trans he said
I would have changed the fluid at 500
Miles and again at 1500 miles on a rebuild

Your leaf springs/
Shocks could be worn causing the suspension to not be able to handle the vibrations caused by going down the road

Front wheel bearings also suspect

Might consider new gear
Lube in rear axle

first thing to check is the rear d shaft u joints and slip yoke. Also check rear pinion for play
Next I would give a full shake down test of front suspension
After that transmission and engine mounts are also easy enough to check
