The paint on running board on my "01 Sport is scratched up badly. Body repair shop advised that it could not be repainted as paint would not adhere to metal and that it would need to replaced with new part which is very expensive at Ford dealership - several hundreds of dollars. Have not looked for part at junk yard, but probably would be scratched up on those as well. The other side is not bad. Any suggestions?

Yea that's what I was thinking. Uhhh...the whole car is metal, obviously they painted that...

Unless it was just so ridiculously rusty that you couldn't paint it, but we're talking about an '01 here, I don't think that's the case.

But wait- aren't the running boards primarily plastic?

Ok
Undercarriage parts-like shackles-trailer hitches-and yes-the tubular nerf bars found on sports and some 4 doors, should be powdercoated, not painted. Even powdercoating will chip from the gravel and salt these parts get sprayed on them daily. Paint won't survive a month on a driven truck. Each pit will be a rust spot, which will migrate under the paint layer. Even powdercoated parts do this. Just take a look at some stock shackles from a northern explorer.

find another body shop

Not arguing with you, JT, but I just found this interesting. The nerf bars (which are metal) on my '05 were painted Dark Shadow Grey metallic from the factory, and they're holding up fine even after quite a few NE winters. No rust, no paint bubbling, etc.
