Sea Foam Insertion Point

Ran the Sea Foam through my iac hose and went well. It smoked like everyone describes, but now my computer tripped the check engine light. I guess I could reset the computer and see if that works...anyone else got any ideas.

What was the code that triggered the CEL?

it tripped mine too. i ended up changing plugs the next day, and disconnecting the battery again, and when i restarted it again, it was fine.

not sure if the carbon was what triggered the light, and it eventually burned away, or what. but resetting the computer after a full day of driving made mine go away. give it a shot. todd.

edit: by the way changing the plugs was done because it was due, not because of the seafoam/CEL
 






Thanks...I reset my computer and the CEL turned off. It however didn't solve my rough idle so I guess that I will be checking for the infamous vacuum leak.
 






I've done this procedure dozens of times on other vehicles and have always used the port on the intake manifold that connects to the pcv valve. It has always worked well.

After digging around under the hood of the new Explorer (5.0) I still can't easily locate the pcv valve. I'm not real sure why they'd not make it easily accessible. Seems like there are any number of spots near the top of the intake where it could have been located.

I'm anxious to do this procedure on the new truck, and even have a handy "top engine" cleaning tool that will control the flow rate of fluid from the can of SF. I still am not sure where to hook it up though. I'm not big on the idea of the BB hose as I want it going through the intake.

Also to clear up the smoking (not sure anyone has really addressed this) the reason the seafoam smokes so badly is the same reason a dodge caravan does. It burns oil. Seafoam is oil based and so will burn as a whitish/bluish smoke on it's way out the tailpipe. The amount has nothing to do with the cleanliness of the engine. For cleaning carbon, water definitely works well as it steams the internals. With water, you should get some steam out the tailpipe as well as a stream of black gunky liquid depending on how dirty the engine interals are. I can't find a good place to do that either other than the TB which is likely what I'll be using to do a cleaning.
 






The PCV valve is a pain to isolate on the 5.0 and I've tried. This post should help you. I just can't get the leverage or the access to release the hose.

Thanks. That was the first thread I saw on this topic, but am still unable to locate any of those hoses. It's also freakin cold out right now so I didn't spend a lot of time. When we get a decent day I'll pull off the intake tubing and dig around a bit more. His pics are pretty close up so it's difficult getting an idea of where he is finding these tubes.

Agreed. I can't make sense of photos 1 or 2 either. Good effort nonetheless.
 






Warmed up a decent amount today so I went and pulled off the intake tub and a few other things. I did the water/steam cleaning on the engine internals that I was planning and then finished up with spraying a bunch of berrymans b12 through the throttle. Still no luck on finding the PCV valve or tubing though. :(
 






Idea for SeaFoam insertion point

So I was working late tonoght putting in a new radiator and steering geer box (btw, I suggest that anyone that tries that make sure youhave someone to help you out...that thing is HEAVY!) Well I decided to run a can of seafoam through the intake and I didn't have any extra hose to fit on the vacum line right under the throttle body so I thought about it...My driveway slants backwards to I decided to pour it little by little directly in to the throttle body while opening the butterfly and reving the engine a little. Well I emptied the whole can in it and it smoked like CRAZY!!! I felt like I was driving a hooptie for the first 2 or 3 minutes. but all the smoke went away and (it may be just my imagination) but it seemed like the engine pulls ALOT harder all the way through the RPM range, not to mention that the idle is sooooooooooooooo smooth now.

Does anyone have any comments about how I put the Sea Foam in? is it bad or what? Seems like it worked... :thumbsup:

I did the same thing yesterday with a squeeze bottle of water to steam clean the engine and then followed it up with a spray can of Berrymans B12 Chemtool. While pouring the water I kept the engine rpms fairly high so as not to damage anything. When using water you definitely don't want to stall it. When you poured the seafoam in, did you let it stall out? It seems a big part of the seafoams cleaning is letting it stall the engine and soak in the combustion chamber for 30 mins or so. Aside from the seafoam injection method described here another seafoam cleaning procedure I did with my Saturn was to remove the spark plugs and our a few ounces straight down into the combustion chamber through each spark plug hole. That worked very well.
 






No I didn't let it stall out, it def. wanted to though. Its seems liek what I did worked very well! Im pleased. Maybe next time I will do the spark plug thing and also let it stall on the sea foam treatment. Thanks for the input!

Not sure the spark plug thing will work real well with these motors. On my 4cyl Saturn, if you remove the plugs you're looking straight down at the piston, so it's easy to pour stuff in and let it soak.
 












Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm guessing that this is the PCV hose...

It seems like a metal pipe with a rubber hose around it...

nope, thats part of your air conditioning system...if you trace it under the intake you'll find it goes to your AC compressor.
 






Just a note: if you stall out the vehicle while doing this you will trip codes.
if you try this on a newer dodge and it stalls you may have to get the codes reset by a dealer=$$$$$, also it's not recommended for the chevy caveliers(yuck) 4 cyl. we did this stuff at the tuneup shop i worked:and according to the instructions you should use the tb tube people here keep mentioning.never did one on a EX though(too bad)

Well I finally got to seafoam the X today. I have been waiting for about 6 months to get a can so I thought I would take the advise here and do it both ways. I can not bring seafoam on a plane so I bought a few cans and had them shipped down in a new F-150 a friend bought in the states.

I started by putting in half of a can through the IAC valve. Let it sit for a half hour then started it. Smoked pretty good (130,000 miles) but it was windy so it did not look to bad as you can see in the pics. Then I shut it down and added the second half into the BB line. This stuff is like gold to me so I wanted to make sure I got a good cleaning from it.

I did get the smoke after each try, maybe a tiny bit more with the BB line. Anyway the X runs smooth and I can not wait to do the Super Duty next. The hardest part was waiting the 30 minutes to restart and see all that carbon flow out the tailpipe.

I did get a code P0102 (low voltage to MAF I think) after I was done but I erased it and all is well.
