Should I trade my 2nd gen for 1st gen?

The 3.5L HO ones were ok. Same drivetrain from the 300M. I had a 300M for a few years & didn't have 1 problem with it.

I think I have seen less than a dozen w/ the 3.5 motor.... I knew there was a diff motor in the later years just forgot.

mmmm a Marauder.....:D:thumbsup:

No. I'd sell it & get something more gas friendly.
The auto trans in a 1st gen sucks. So does the engine when your coming from a V8.
It's not going to be much better on gas. And it's going to ride worse given the different suspension.
I love 1st gens, but you have to weigh the factors.

I have been reading and posting on the explorer forum for nearly two years since I have owned a first gen. 206,x.. miles and still bone stock and has been a little abused on and off road. My trans still shifts just fine. Perhaps I got a good one but from what the last owner said, everything is bone stock.

I love my first gen and would like to get a second gen but can't afford it right now. Found some bronco's I may try to get.

Good luck with your hunt. If you like first gens better, do the trade and perhaps get a little money in your pocket from it.

206K on the original trans? Original valve body? Original shift modulator? I find that hard to believe. That may be the record if true.

i've got almost 300K original engine, original transmission, original suspension parts. nothing major has been changed, just maintenance etc.

only drive train issues is the rear differential has a leak (just keep it filled) and vacuum modulator on transmission needs replaced

Mmm yes, Marauder.

11 out of 10 people under 30 reported penis enlargement after driving a Marauder.

Nah, My Dad's was at 220k before his tranny crapped out, and that thing towed sometimes too. If you take care of them, don't abuse them and perform regular maintenance, they can last a long time. I've seen explorers with more miles on transmissions that never got any new parts but filters and oil.

Damn I guess mine would shrivel up then? Because I'm over 30....

Guess I'll stay away from the Marauder....hahaha

Guess I'm just lucky to have every 1st gen trans last only 90K or so before it needed to be rebuilt. Granted I'm hard on my vehicles.

Have you considered a Citroen 2CV? Loads of room, even more if you slide open the roof, and great gas mileage too. ;)

Lets play with some numbers

40 miles per day @ 15 mpg = 2.8 gallons

lets use a worst case scenario of 5.00 per gallon--

5x2.8= 14.00 per day

now, 20 work days a month makes 280.00 in fuel spent.

if you get a car which gets 30 mpg you will spend about 140.00 in fuel saving 140.00 per month.

Where are you going to get as secure of a car for 140.00 per month to break even? And, I bet the insurance on the smaller car will be higher.

I say keep the mounty and drive it. Getting a more economical car will not be economical @ 40 miles per day.

200 maybe, but not 40.

edit
it is relatively simple to convert the AWD to a select-able 4WD shifting transfer case.

I replaced the PITA vacuum modulator thing on the trans when I purchased it a few years ago. It was drinking all of my tranny fluid so I had to change it. :p:

Considering it had 184k miles in September of 2009, and now 206k October 2011, I don't really drive much considering this is my daily driver and only working vehicle right now. Averaging around 11,000 miles a year with 3,000 mile stops in at the Ford service lane for oil changes, even if my sticker says it's good for 5,000 miles. Main seal leaks a little so I lose on average 1/2 qt every 3,000 miles.

If I run the crap out of my tiny German built 4.0, my main bearings start knocking even though I have not heard them in many months, generally hot summer months when under a good up hill load, 3/4 throttle.

Not trying to hi jack the thread, but everything wrong with my explorer is listed in my registry. For 206K miles and darn near bone stock, it's not that bad off. Given the person I purchased it from made $906 a month disability and could not care for it. To my knowledge the engine and trans have never left the vehicle and lack any decent junk yard inventory markings such as the engine and trans in my 99 cavalier.

If I get another car I will be either trading or selling the Mountaineer to get it so I wont be spending anything per month to buy it. Also if we get a car it will be a full size car, and the insurance wont be any higher (already checked) and the extra leg room would be nice.

As I said earlier it's not that easy to swap this one to a part-time transfer case. The speed sensor is in the transfer case instead of the rear axle like the later models so I would have no speedometer. I would also have to swap the rear axle or figure something else out. I don't have anywhere to do the work either, so that's not an option for me.
