Spdrcer34 is going V8!....

well the accel spark plug is 1/8th" shorter than the plugs that came on the engine. they could have been shorter but it seems accel thought it would be an awesome i dea to make the socket flats ENOURMOUS, which was not necesary.

just from looking at your pics i think the bosch plugs your using may be a little longer than the ones i have(in blue) so if you could get a measure ment from the beveled edge above the threads that seals the chamber to the outside tip then we could know for sure.

i think i am going to go ahead with these headers and a 1/2 inch steel spacer.

modify tubes good idea, spacer = headaches! If you go spacer get some locking header bolts and GOOD gaskets

Ryan, you know that you can add to an order from Summit yes? I do that usually, because of the basic high handling charges. I recently added two coils and a couple of digital gauges to an order, so those ended up costing nothing extra for S&H.

You can add to an order as long as it hasn't FULLY shipped yet.

For example if you order 5 items, 4 in stock and 1 on Back Order. You can add to your order with no additional charges until that last item ships out.

Ryan

Yes, there are conditions. Summit has great customer service I'm glad to say. With so much competition prices are close from most places. My local performance shop is not much higher on just about everything.

plug pic?

No pic. I loaned my Digital Camera to a friend so he could take it scuba diving....

In my calipers, the Bosch Platinum plugs that I have measure 2-1/8" from the seat to the tip.

Those short Accels you have look like they measure 1-15/16" to 2"

Not a huge savings. I could save 1/8" by shaving down the 'bottom' of the screw on tip to bring the boot farther onto the plug.

I'll modify my tubes.

Progress!!!!

I found a transmission...at the start of this project, I planned on swapping to a Manual Transmission. I can't afford the transmission I want, yet. So I plan on going forward with a 2WD 4R70W transmission.

It took me a while to find one...

Hell of a lot cleaner than mine.

Nice and clean, what's it out of?

It's out of a 1996 Mercury Mountaineer. 118k. 60 day warranty. ( I don't know if I will be done in 60 days, probably not)

I have never seen a 5.0L 2WD Mounty...Percentage wise, I have to say they are more rare than a 5.0L 2WD Explorer...

Ryan

Yes that would be rare, the Mountaineer started in 97 also.

I don't know what else you might do to it, but try to replace at least the DTRS, the sensor for the shifter. The early versions until late 97 had sealing issues, moisture would make them malfunction. The later version doesn't bolt in, but there is a sealed replacement for those.

The guy at the wrecking yard didn't have the vehicle anymore....all I have is the 'info ticket' that was on the transmission...build date of 9/96. So it could have been an early `97.

I have 2 of the gear sensors...now I know I'll keep the other one! Thanks.

Next thing I need to do is remove the Radius Arm support/cross member, and start to mock up the motor mounts in the Engine Cross Member.

When I cut my headers up, can I use a section of 'aluminized steel' tubing in place of the mild steel that was there?

What exactly is aluminized steel? I know they use it exclusively in Modern Exhaust systems...but that is usually the tailpipe..

Ryan

I've heard that it's a little harder to weld, but that usually comes from exhaust shops, and that's not a good authority. I can see it being tougher to deal with, but a good welder can likely do it.

I think aluminized steel is more rust resistance than mild steel, then theres stainless steel. I think.

Yes it's better for corrosion resistance, but the mixed metal is what you want to know about.

Corrosion resistance is the reason they use it on Exhaust systems...

My plan is to have them (Ceramic? HiTemp Powdercoat) coated after I get them welded up..

Have you got a good plater there, it's not cheap here from the one place I've heard of.
