Spdrcer34 is going V8!....

Okay,

BACK ON TRACK!

I pulled the dash from the `97, and I did a whole write-up on the proper removal, which can be read HERE: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=230020

I got the `97 HVAC box removed, and I used the rubber sound insulation material as kind of a layout template on the `92 firewall to give a better idea what EXACTLY needs to be changed. It's not going to be too bad.

I also got the 5.0L removed from the `97. That took a LITTLE longer than I think it SHOULD have. The removal was complicated by the fact that the Explorer was hit HARD on the passenger side, moving the radiator OVER and INWARDS. The Fan was pressed up against the radiator.

I also discovered that I have a GT40P motor....The earliest GT40P motor that I know of, it was built 10/21/96. Anyone have, or SEEN an earlier GT40P?

I think I am going to try some FRPP 94/95 Mustang Headers. There are pics posted on a few sites of them installed in a Ranger.....we'll see how it goes in the Explorer.

cool!

I imagine ford started building the motors earlier than they started putting them in the Explorers. Which was in late 97 model year. I think.

Yougonna do a refresh on the engine or just slip it on In There?

Matt,

I'm gonna just throw it in AS IS. It was very well maintained, and the ONLY reason the guy got rid of it is his wife wrecked it.

I am adding AirBags to the `92 as well......that's gotta be another First Too...isn't it?

Ryan

Does that take slot of work?

Ryan, for the airbags, get the matching model of airbag module, and side airbag sensors. Hopefully that truck didn't even have the side sensor wiring, it was in my 99.

The ONLY Airbag Module was in the passenger side footwell area, just a couple inches from the Fuel Pump Inertia Switch.

If it had Side AirBag Sensors I have NO DOUBT that the Airbags would have deployed. She slowed all the way down to between 5-10 mph, and she T-boned a car doing 35-40. The Forward inertia wasn't bad at all, but the Explorer was turned almost all of the way around.

Ryan

Yes I doubt that Ford then had begun installing the side airbag stuff. They did in 1999, even though few had it. The modules are programmed to require a resistance in the 99+ modules, even without the special seats. Many have an airbag dash light because of those resistors. I forgot that you have the whole truck, use as much of the 97 wiring as possible.

I think the ONLY things not transferring to the `92 from the `97 is the Rear Wiper (I don't have one), Rear Defrost (again, don't have it). and ABS. Although I am going to see if it is possible for the `97 ECM to accept the signal from JUST the RABS in the `92.

That may take a bit more research....

I am even going to modify my Drivers Door exactly like you had to do, so I can make the FULL swap of the door wiring. It will be SO MUCH easier than when I added Power Windows the first time around...SPAGHETTI CITY!....this won't be nearly as bad.

I'm not done yet, but in just talking to EVERYONE that has done a similar project, it is 100% easier to have the WHOLE donor vehicle sitting right next the project vehicle.

I thought that the 91-92 models only had front abs, and then went to all four wheels in 93-94? Or is RABS different from ABS? I always thought RABS meant Rear-ABS

No the 91-92 models came with rear abs then later Ford added front abs to the mix.

Ryan, if you are using the later GEM module, that runs the rear wiper, which is different in 95-01. The 92 is in the wiper switch or elsewhere in the dash, and the 95-01's have four wires to the wiper instead of three.

I swapped the wiring and wiper motor from a 97 into my 93 hatch. The wiring had to be changed slightly to merge with my 99 truck wiring(different from 93). The wiper bolts in, plus better mounting bolts, the 91-94's have a different location for the main ground. It was no big deal to alter the wiring slightly, mostly in the truck at the edge of the headliner. The tough part was that the wiring hole needs to be bigger in the body of the truck for the larger wiring harness. I have most of these pictures in my big thread. Regards,

Don, thanks for the pic of the door mods. I am going to make the same mod to mine.

As for the rear wiper, I don't have one. so wiring won't be an issue at all!

Ryan

Sorry about the fuzzy picture, all three were that way. I had been cutting and filing on it for a while, my hands were shaking. The steel is thick there, a good cutting tool would work best there, a tiny air sabre saw if you can.

I'm going to strip the rest of the Engine Bay Wiring out of the `92, and `97 tomorrow. I'm going to see about cutting the firewall out of the `97 also....

Ryan

I looked at the firewall, and then the seams/rivets, then I had a trusted bodyman look at it. He was the one that convinced me that the clip would be easier than the other routes. All ways are possible, I was limited by my confidence and abilities, plus lack of most fabrication tools etc. I did my work at a friend's house/garage, so time was a big factor.

I think that you can handle any route, just pick one that you are most comfortable with.

The hardest part will be the brake booster, steering column area.

I've gotta buy a few spotweld drill bits, and get some stuff removed that way.
