So I have developed a sqeak that sounded like a belt, but after a closer look, it sounds like it's coming from the back of the motor; or maybe even from the bellhousing area. My only guess is the input shaft bearing...

Anyone have any ideas on my 4.0 OHV?:(

cam position sensor is a common squeek producer I believe, you may try a search

You are automatic correct? or 5 speed?

If its from the trans you can likely hear it better from under the truck, back o f the engine would point to cam sensor

X2. If it is the Synchronizer/CMP, it would be a good idea to fix it ASAP. It can sieze and/or rip the teeth off the drive gear which also stops the oil pump....

good call guys;) Serched and found this video, that's the noise:thumbsup: So what are we talking cost wise here? is it just a sensor or that whole shaft? this looks like a real pain to get to as well:mad:

The squeak is usually in the Synchronizer which sits in the same location as a conventional distributor would have on an earlier version of the engine. The Synchronizer is just an aluminum housing with a gear driven shaft rotating inside its bore - again just like the bottom part of a distributor. It moves the rotation of the camshaft outside of the block where the Camshaft Position Sensor can be located for easy service. Unfortunately, as the miles accumulate, the lubrication inside the housing can dry up and the squeaking begins.

It is easy to remove once the peripherals are out of the way. However, it must be timed to the camshaft on reassembly. Dealers have a special alignment tool for this.

This is the Synchronizer with the CMP sensor mounted on top.

this thing looks like a pita to change!:thumbdwn: I can't even see the thing, I can only feel it. Do you think this thing would make it through a weekend of off roading? :( it's not sqeaking all the time

removing the upper intake will make accessing the sensor ALOT easier

My dad has a couuple of 4.0's sitting in his garage right now so I'm going to take a look at them, so I know what I'm doing a bit more.;)

Something to watch out for if you replace the CMP - depending on the year, Ford used 1 of 2 types, variable reluctance and hall effect. They are not interchangeable. Just check to see if the connector on your engine is 2-wire or 3-wire, then match it.

I think I may have to get Stic-Cam involved here. I still can not see the stupid thing. and I really don't feel like removing the intake if I don't have too.

is there any way to tell if it's a 2 or 3 wire based on engine and year?

Nope don't think so, i just looked on Kragen's web site for the cam position sensor for 1999 X WIth OHV motor and they list both 2 pin and 3 pins:confused:

best bet might be to reach back there if ya can and feel the plug if it narrow
then it a 2 pin wide plug would be a 3 pin:dunno:

99 its gonna be 2 pins

Or just feel the number of wires going into the plug.

there are some pictures and discussion about the 95 vs 97 sensor in this thread:

Might help you see what you are dealing with...I had to swap them out (or attempt to) after the engine was in place and stabbed to the tranny, I did it by feel working around the upper intake...if I had to do it again I would just pull the upper intake, its only a 30 minut job and it gives you a chance to re-seal the top of your 4.0L (new o rings, and lower intake gasket)

I called and it looks like Napa can have a New one for me tommorow morning;)

I love technology! :D:p:

Got it all fixed, but what a PITA!!! I heard that Ford charges alomost $700 bucks to fix this:eek: So the time is well worth it:thumbsup:

Dang. Thats a pretty penny. Oh well at least you got it fixed.

Id like to bring this up again, if no one minds.. Did this sound happen every now and then? I think I might have the same problem.. It almost sounds like a wet belt, but my truck hasnt seen water for a while cuz i just got my engine problem sorted out ( i had thought).. has anyone else dealt with this?

most likelly, ford has a small issue with these, i see 3.0 12v tauruses weekely, if tou have a manual trans make sure its not the pilot bearing (see if the noise changes with the pedal), if not then theres your prob.
how did everyone else time these? if they are out a little bit it will run ok but start throwing some funny codes
