ok...just really waiting for the weekend but She's insured and went to DMV yesterday and got it transfered over. Know just needs a smog test

Went Tuesday and bought the following for it..

oil
oil filter
plugs
cap
rotor
fuel filter
floormats

She's idleing a bit high now (1000rpm), so we'll change all the stuff above and clean up the engine compartment. Got to see where the oil is leaking from before I can fix it. If after we readjust her timing and replace all above, and she dosn't pass smog, my dad has a brand new MSD ignition we'll through on just for smog. However I'm pretty sure she'll pass ok.

So Worked on the B2 today. Went to the junk yard add fond everything we needed And saw Cybergasm down lookin for parts.


So we changer the oil, plugs, car & rotor. Started it back up and it ran worse, I mean really crapy! No power, sputtering.:thumbdwn: So we went and got a new set of wires and put them on, we figured we must of had the fireing order wrong or something...still not sure what it was, but after the new wires, she runs like a champ! Very smooth. Still leaky oil some wheere though, so we'll have to keep a eye and see where from, but we still think valve covers which look to be a ***** to get at.

So after everthing I gave her a bath..

Got a spare tire carrier off a 89-90 B2, which aperas to be much better made. Still have to put the B2 spare cover back on.

and cleaned up the interior a bit...not that it was in bad shape to start, I think it still had the factory floor mats in it

Still waiting on my stereo to come in the mail.

and have to still fix the gear on the driver door, so the power window will work right, and I can put the door pannel back on.

Look everyone..It's a 4 by 4! Still got to fix that too.

I start driving her to work come monday

yea wasn't a very good day finding Explorer parts except for those taillight lenses I got but I did make some good finds for my Dodge D50 tho.

does anyone make aluminum valve covers for this, or I'm i stuck with stock ones?

None that I know of.

nobody makes any valve covers for the 2.9L except factory metal ones.

FMS made some chrome ones but those were sold out years ago from the dealers as fas as I know.

the drivers side is not too bad but the passenger side is a *****

Might consider getting new upper and lower intake gaskets in there at the same time??? Similar to the 4.0L they are known to leak over time

Yeah I looked on line last night and found nothing! The only thing I did find was Fast Parts Network shows some available, but they are saying 2.9 and 3.0 are the same

Anyway, so I have 3 or +4 issues left to fix.

1. Oil Leak~ I have two options, buy the good gaskets for $40-$50 bucks, or just use grey silacone like I use for my diffs.

2. Drivetrain vibration! Above 45mph I have a vibration, that gets wosre with speed. It seems like it needs to build momentum first though. I belive this is a tire coming apart inside, the tires are kinda old, but have tread. I'll fix this tonight...hopefully. I'll switch tires and wheels with Lil Sis project (don't ask!) and see if this solve it.

3. Power Window. Have the gear, just need to figure out how to get to the old one, looks like you just unbolt the motor.

4. Stereo!!! It's in the mail

Yeah it's got a goofy drive shaft in the rear It looks like a little 1" tube goes into a 2 1/2" donut thing. The Vibration is kinda random. some time it starts at 45mph, or sometime not till 50-55mph, it's more time based if that makes sence, another words after 5 seconds above 45mph.

did they put better shafts on the 89-90 B2"s Because there was a couple of 89-90 I think in the JY over the weekend.

some BII's had a real U joint/cv joist style driveshaft yes

Not sure what years, I think the 2.8L trucks (84-85) also had real shafts not the wanna be front wheel drive CV axleshaft d shaft your 88 has.
the shaft you have is a problem magnent and a vibration *****

Well we'll try the tires first... That will tell us witch it is. Looks like Bronco Graveyard has B2 rear shafts for $180 which is pretty good!

Cheaper then new tires

What a steal

$500 that is a steal, I have a 84 I did some horse trading for but have had some issues due to my lack of auto knowledge or funds not sure what it is. But that is a great looking truck for the bucks, these trucks are a blast to drive.

Vibration...GONE!

Well all fixed, I went over to my dad's to swap tires, and I said before we do this let look at the d-shaft and see what I can find. Then I find a d-shadt bolt half way out All 8 bolts were lose, enough that I could take them out with my fingers So i tighened them up, and the vibration is gone! It's so nice drive in the fast lane again


This weekend we'll tackle the Valve covers, I found the good (blue) gasket for 39 bucks.


On another note, can I just say this thing is so much fun to drive! I was hanging behind a G35 coupe today, and the guy could not belive I was on his ass the whole time. Even with 3.45's it's got lots of power, I'd almost say more then the explorer, of corse the Explorer weights almost twice as much, and is pushing 35's with 5.13's around
