92 Explorer EB 4X4
The Explorer was running like a Champ 92 EB, 4X4 Auto. stopped at store and came back in about 30 min. It always cranked with in 6 Sec. or less it started fine I pulled up to the exit and it sounded like it was running on 2 cylinders.. then shut down and only sputtered a coulple time then only would Spin. I checked the fuel pump Fuse and other fuses Nothing poored gas into intake tube it cranked. and shut down but, I had just put in 10 gal of gas then i thought Fuel pump .. ? Finally noticed that with the switch in the Run position that the only light that came on was the Battery light and the gauges worked. No CEL or Seatbelt light or any thing else..Head lights , turn signals and wipers worked fine.So it's either the fuel pump or the fuel Injector's. I hope You all may have a simple fix. couldn't find the red button under the dash. to make sure the fuel pump switch was not turned off. Thanks for any Help !

.. the button is under dash at passenger side...

The fuel pump inertia switch is located under the glove box behind the carpet as pictured below When you turn the key from off to run the fuel pump will energize for a few secs to pressurize the fuel system. Normally if your quiet you can near this. If you can't hear the pump you'll need to but a meter on the inertia switch and test for 12v as you turn the key to run.. (note 12v will only show up for 2 secs so you'll need to read it quick)

No CEL with key on is a sign of no power to the pcm-
It should remain lit while key is in the run position, with engine not running.

is there a pcm relay or fuse on the 1st gen?

If the pcm or ecu has no power, the fuel pump will not run

... on mine the battery and check engine lite stay on with the key in the run position...good call...
...he also could have a bad negative cable which is screwing things up...

This is a new Battery with new cable ends and rechecked ground wires on engine. I heard about the connector on older Bronco II's on column switch connecter terminal . coming loose and causing this could ,that still be a problem in 92 ? I had a 97 Bronco that the key switch was hot all the time maybe it could be a switch problem? I don't remember what Pcm's cost now days but hope cheaper than the old days.. OH Salvage yard might help. could be a quick test of the puter...

...cable ends will not resolve corrosion in the cable sheathing...cable ends are for emergency, temporary fix...;)
...have you checked the lite if it comes on now or if it starts??? is your fuel pump working...more feedback from you is needed...:D

I believe that the PCM relay is on the right inner finder, under the fuse box, beside the fuel pump relay.

Still in parking lot worried about being towed now...

When Switching the engine to run. Only the battery light comes on. there is no self test. It is like turning the switch back into ECC . I will check out the fuel pump relay tomorrow long walk to town.. like I say I have spark because it will run If I pour fuel into the intake tube..

...then don't forget to re-read post #3, derocha's post about the inertia switch before you head down there...;)

Great pics of the Inertia Switch. It is in the proper down position. When I turn the Key on should I not get more than just the Battery light and all the Gauges moving into position. ?? like cel and other light test..

no other lights will come on, you need to LISTEN for the fuel pump to prime when you turn the key to ON

If no fuel pump then I suspect the relay 100%

Sounds like a fuel issue to me very very very common

...my check engine lite comes on with battery lite till it started...

Ok I looked at the relays the one closest to the front has been changed at one time would this be the fuel pump relay. If so I will test it.. Thanks

My Haynes is in a storage building , wonder where...

AS My Mother used to tell me "Well of all Things" I checked the relay and it seemed to be good. Clicking as it should..and lighting a test light for a couple seconds.. So then I knew I had to pull the pump. Wow missing a Strap on the tank also..Dropped tank and pulled Pump . well I pulled the Level gauge and a hose with 2 wires hanging close by.. The Pump itself was still in the tank. someone had changed it also and did not use fuel grade Hose.. Hose was soft and gooey.. I can say I am glad I don't have to buy a $70. Pump. and the filter was in place so don't think I have to worry about those rubber particels

Thanks for all the advice .. I learned a lot

Wow put the fuel pump back on and it will run if you run a B+ wire to the relay lug.. but no power comes thru the new relay The B+ from ? is not there. The care runs great if I do the jumper.. I checked the enertia switch again and it is fine I will check for Voltage there. What to do...??

Well I put on a new Relay. no Help there is good power to the relay coil but the Switch connector had 12 volt but would not power a test light. I need to use it tomorrow so I Ran B+ to the Fuel pump side and it cranks and runs. the dash gauges don't work this way. Where does the power to the switched part of the relay come from up the line . I sure do miss my Haynes Book with schematics.Does the PCM supply the voltage to the switched part of the Relay?

I had to go to work today so I hot wired the pump to run.. Drove it to work seem Ok. Drove it back home and popped the Hood. The B+ from the the relay sw. to the pump would make the test light glow barely. It would show 12 to 14 Volts.. So this meant to me that there was a bad connection causing a lose of Amprage. I hooked up the test light to the relay Socket on the main + side and Ground. It was Bright. (hate it when something fixes itself) Now we know that it can unfix it just as fast.. and strand me again.. Ok this post is over unless you know what was Wrong. ? Hate electrical problems that fix their self...LOL See what happens tomorrow.. Thanks again for the Info...
