Strange Symbol

I have a 2006 Explorer V6. Yesterday a symbol started showing up in the odometer screen. It is always there behind what is showing on the screen. It looks like falling specs, or flies. Any ideas?

Does it look like this? Not an Explorer but my display looks like this one. No idea why or if there's a way to fix it besides replacing the screen... I'll snap a pic of mine tomorrow if I think of it.

It did finally go away.
