weird symbol on phone display

while taking a trip around lake michigan, all of a sudden in the phone status window on the home screen, there is typcially the signal strength, batter strength, and i have the 911 / medic symbol.

For a short bit, there was a triangle with a letter "R" inside it. Went though all the books and came up with nothing.

any ideas what this symbol meant?

could it be Roaming - i know when i am out of my carriers area and into an alternative carrier area a small "R" shows up on my display.
