I have a 2004 Explorer XLT. The 4x4 controls are 3 vertically-stacked buttons to the left of the radio controls. To the right of the radio-controls immediately opposite these 3 buttons are three black plastic squares that appear to be punch-out panels to install 3 similar switches.
Does anybody know:
1) What these were designed for?
2) Can I buy switches to install in these holes for my off-road lights?
3) Does Ford sell them, or if not, where can I get them?

Thanks in advance,

Those that were equipped with the message center had navigation buttons in place of the 4X4 buttons. And the 4X4 buttons were on the opposing side. You could probably get either of those clusters and wire them up to be switches. But they'll have wording on them.

thats true...it would work but be kinda weird with the wording. people woudl be like hey i didnt know yours was a 4x4 and youll be like uh....

well on my 2002 i just bought on ebay a spare radio Bezel just so I could add the extra switches to mine...
No I do not have message center but I hate having the black covers on the are where the switches are...

On my 2WD 1995 I have the radio cluster for a 4WD and it amazes me the amount of people who think it is 4wd especially looking how it does..

The following pics show you a close up of what I bought and the switch..
Not sure how you would wire it.

Thanks..

I placed a Cutler hammer 4x203 Switch in there. It's latch up and momentary down.

If you're just gonna use push-buttons in there, you could try seperating your tabs and sticking them on a switch. Then get a nice clear label and stick it on each litttle tab. Or find a place that prints golf balls, they use a machine to do that which can print on them just great. Really weird to watch too.
