Whats everyone's two cents on this??i've read al's thread over the years and with the gas prices going nothing but up and my explorers value plummeting i was wondering what are the best add-ons for fuel mileage someone could do on a basically stock 4.0 sohc that has a kkm kit on it..

The first three things I would recommend are:

(1) underdrive pulleys
(2) electric fan
(3) synthetic fluids everywhere

Good luck .....

would the 4th be a Air intake kit? i am truly contimplating on spending $250 on a kit tonight.

If you go with an intake, to maximize its worth, you need to go with a cat back exhaust also.

Actually, 4th on my list would be a good computer tune that maximizes mileage.

..I would like to add these even though they are not add-ons..;)

...Keep tire pressure up and rpms down
...Keep your air filter and MAF clean
...Loose all un-necessary weight in vehicle
...Easy on the acelerator
..Tune-ups and alignments may help save gas too...

I would always go with a custom made setup; your local muffler shop can do whatever you want.

Good luck ....

thanks aldive, i work in a shop with no pipe bender:( , and its so very hard to let someone else work on my truck.

p.s.- hope the dealer has ok news for you aldive, am curious as to what the hell it was

...Thank you Al...:D

My big thing is when you do exhaust, go with a straight through muffler. Though they do not sound as good as chambered (on v6's at least IMO), they help with gas milege/power much more. My muffler now is currently a hooker max flow (decided upon charts posted by Jakee. Best flowing/most HP gain/quietest) and Im pretty happy. I just contacted Doug to get my 93 Torque tune traded out for a 87 Fuel Milege tune.

Al, who did your tunes? Doug?

Not to hijack the thread but i have an UDP question. The explorer spends some time off road and in the desert. Im wondering how it will affect the ability to cool the engine at 100+ degress and hotter. Ive ran them on many street cars with no ill effects, but never on an offroad vehicle.

I not only have the underdrive crank pulley/damper, but also have an underdrive water pump pulley.

I have towed a Jeep on a tandem trailer in the Florida summer with no issues and regularly tow a 4 kayak trailer also with no worries.

I use a e fan also.

Hmm something to think about for sure. Im looking to squeeze every MPG i can out of the explorer. Its about 19-20 now even with 33's. Not too bad but id love to get better and kinda show people with it can be done with the right mods and driving style.

I am a true believer in underdriving. It is quite possibly the best single mod for both HP and MPG that you can do.

Good luck ....

is there an air silencer on these trucks? if there is, i want to remove it, that will help the air flow as well,

Quick question...Im a little new to all computer talk when it comes to vehicles.

So if i had 32" tires, could I get a custom tune for my 05 Ex to adjust shift points and maximize gas mileage? And where would i go to get such a tune?

And what kind of straight through mufflers do yall reccomend...glass packs?

Ok my questions might sound pretty stupid, but If i get underdrive/overdrive pulleys and my stock belt doesn't fit, how exactly do I go about getting one that does? Also I'm kind of curious about this electric fan thing. How does this create an advantage over my stock one? and how do I go about removing the old fan and installing an electric fan?
