What kind of in-bumper reinforcements (if any) do you have to support the spindle and the metal on that side of the bumper?

I used the 3/8" thick angle iron posted in this picture and the 70's homemade weight bench to build the tire carrier and the mounting plates for the spindle and the latch on each side. (dead links)

I do want to gusset the mounting plate in the center just for added strength, I don't need to but I like to build stronger than needed so I don't have to worry about it in the future.

I'm the same way, you can never have it be too strong.

I saw the angle iron but no gussets. It's hard to tell with build threads whether or the builder tacks in a little extra support because of everything going on. Seems pretty common to just seat the spindle right into the steel plate without any reinforcement. Can't bash it til I see for myself though. Building front and rears in the springtime (fingers crossed!).

There are four different angled gussets (three of which are 4", the length of the bottom side of the spindle shaft) on the spindle alone, these pictures are during the welding and don't show all of them. I want to add atleast two angled gussets to the angle iron moubting bracket on the spindle side for added strength.

Ever since you've made this thread Ive been brainstorming ideas for one whenever my trac grows up...
Today at work I saw an old beater Honda Passport... the back end looks similar in size (At least where it's swinging spare tire rack was)... Im thinking it would be easy to retro fit another carrier onto my trac... any comments on this?

The factory carriers that mount to the jeeps and other suv's won't work because the bed on our Trac's are composite. Plus the taillights goes all the way to the top of the bed. That's why I custom made mine from scratch. The aftermarket ones they sell would have to be modified alot to fit our Trac's, it would just be easier to get the kit like I did and cut the pipe to length that is needed. Honestly it would be easier to build a custom full steel rear bumper and swing out tire carrier to that than what I did but I didn't have enough steel or time to build.

Funny you say that Scope, I've been meaning to put my C.B. handle (MidnighRebel) on the swing out tire carrier.

Steve, go back and look at the first couple pages on the thread, there's a couple pictures from straight behind the truck with and without the tire mounted.

Haha that'd be cool. I dont have a handle yet, of course I hardly talk on CB channels either. I have a 10 meter radio so I am usually on more private channels or HAM channels.

when i was otr i never had loads around here i was lucky if i got to drive threw i mainly did hot loads that were close to bein late and needed quick delivery they paid me well if i could get them there on time
