So i found a set of bfg mud tires on jeep rims on craigslist. They are 31x10x15.
Now how differnet would they be from 265/75/16?

Rim sizes confuse me very much.
265 = 31.6 inches i believe.
Does the smaller rim size mean theres more tire?
Or does it scale down?

How much of a different in the size would there be?
Becuase i would like 265.75.16
But if there isnt too big a differnce i might settle for the 31x10x15s becuase they are much cheaper. And theres a spare included.

Any help is much appreciated, Thanks =)

You mean guess you're sticking with 16s.

Typically, 4WD tyres for 15" rims or less are rated like 31.5 x 10.5 x 15, where 16s and above are rated in 265/75/16. But that's OK, we can still get one back to the other.

The last number for each is the rim size (15 or 16).

The 265 works out the tread width, which is equivalent to the 10.5 (25mm is 1", so 265 is 10" + 15mm, or around 1/2", for a 10.5" total).

A combination of the 265/75 & the 16 gives you the overall diameter. The 75 refers to aspect ratio expressed as a % of tread width. Aspect ratio is the distance from the rim lip to the top of the tyre. You need to multiply it by 2 to get the amount of rubber on each side of the rim. So 75% of 265 (or 10.5") is approx 7.75". Multiply that by 2 and you get 15.5", add that to the rim diameter of 16 and you get 31.5" (and we know a 265/75/16 is actually 31.6").

So a 265/75/16 is really a 31.5 x 10.5 x 16 in old-school measurements.

Hope that helps.

Yes sticking with 16s.

I know which part of the size refers to what. Its just putting all of it together that confuses me (if that makes any sense at all). Im just horrible at math.

It does help when someone spells it out using your example tho.
Haha Thanks. ;)
