just installed a Magnaflow cat back yesterday and drilled a few holes in the stock airbox. I put in a K&N panel filter that is a little smaller than the stock size and had to custom make a lip gasket to get it to seal right. Does anyone think I am better off going with the K&N intake kit or something like that? thanks :salute:

i would recommend just going for an amsoil filter, its simpler and will filter better. it wont give you the low growl a KN or other CAI will give you though.

The K$N filter idea sounds good on paper.

Once you wait over 20 hours for one to dry out after cleaning though. :(

And you have to wait.

I also found the oil was no good for MAF sensors. It does heat up and emit vapors everywhere in the air path.

Speaking of MAF
Be very careful of doing anything upstream of it, like, placing another vehicle's air filter. Altering anything upstream of the maf will alter the airflow across the metering tube. Just a heads up.

I was told( by a maf chip blaster-calibrator) if an elbow is added, it must be at least 3 diameters from the maf for the air to straighten out. So, if the intake tube is 3", the elbow must be at least 9" upstream of the MAF.

Switching from a box type filter to an open element "might" not be such a good thing. If you have a datalogger you will see what I mean.

Personally, I would look for an intake with an oiless -or even paper felt filter. It is more important to filter the air, than it is to pass it.

thanks everyone for the tips . I will look into this a little further to see how it will effect things

i agree, i have the KN 77 intake and im tired of cleaning that damn cone every couple days. one trip into the woods or in the dirt and that filter cone has to be washed and oiled or ur rig will start breathing like a 70 yr old smoker. im planning on getting an amsoil conical filter to replace my KN cone. it'll breath much better and you dont have to oil it every week.

If you have not experienced a decrease in mileage or engine performance, chances are your filter is fine and does not yet need cleaning. To be more specific, the filter does not require cleaning if you can still see the wire screen on the entire air filter regardless of how dirty it may appear.
