Heres the deal:

I'm planning on lifting my 4.0l V6 94 Explorer with the 4" rough country lift, it recommends 33" x 12.50 x 15 with the creager soft 8's. After all of the lifting is done I would like to re-gear to maybe 4.10s to make it more stock again

My question to anyone willing to answer is, is re-gearing a big deal when you add bigger tires and lift or would running it all stock cause too many problems?

What ratio you got in there now? It'll cost you to re gear but it's worth the money by far.

Changing to a bigger tire will decrease effectiveness of stock gear ratio, resulting in need to regear. Generally it is about 15% effectiveness lost with going to 33's or bigger

How do I find out what gear ratio I have in my stock explorer?

Check the sticker on the drivers side door.

There is an Axle code....post it here.

The sticker on the door says I have Axel 41.

That's a 3.27 ratio. I would absolutely re-gear with 4.56's. I ran my '94 on 33's with 4.56 gears and it ran just about right. If you're into offroading, I'd even consider going to 5.12's, but if it spends most of it's time on pavement, then 4.56's are good.

+1

I have 4.10s and 33s, and is merely adequate. 4.56 definitely would be better.

I have to ask if you guys that have regeared are manual or auto and if that would make a difference in choosing between a 4.56, 4.88 or 5.??

Mine was an auto and if it had been a manual, I would have gone 5.13 if I was wheeling it a lot, and 4.56's for more road use.

Check out the gear calculator here: Grimm Jeeper Gear Calculator

It looks a little intimidating, but just select your Transmission and transfer case from the drop down menu and put in your desired tire size and you can try different ratios. It will tell you your engine RPM's in different gears and at different speeds. Then you can see what you're rig will be like on the highway compared to stock. It is fairly accurate.

I run 4.88's with 35's and an A4LD auto. I could have done 5.13's and probably should have but it's still plenty peppy in town and rolls down the highway nice. It even crawls not that bad, but a doubler will give me all the crawl I can handle.

I would be wondering if 33x12.50 will clear with only 4" of lift.x2 on atleast 4.56 my vote 4.88s

the lift I'm looking to get, the 4" Rough Country lift recommends 33x12.5 and says it will fit with no rubbing and no trimming necesssary.

but I have another question about re-gearing, with my current axles, will I be able to regear to 4.56's or is it necessary to swap axles? I know a lot of guys swap their axles and then regear

Thanks

I think you can go all the way to 5.12 in the d35 no need to swap.4" lift just sounds small to me for 33x12.50 with no rubbing, if you plan on doing hard 4x4. Most people run 5.5" and 33s.but I really don't know.most people only swap out the rear end with a 95+ to get disc brakes.
