I have an additional radiator in front of the normal one and it sticks down somewhat further. Is this a trans cooler? And if so does it mean i have the towing package?. I ask as I have to tow my 1963 Chris Craft next summer and she is quit heavy (Wooden 22 foot).

Thanks

The extra ut is a trans cooler ( factory ),

I tow a Jeep on a tandom trailer in the hot Floda sun with just that factory cooler with no problems whatsooever.

Good luck......

the stock fin type trans cooler is better than nothing, but you are better off with a larger aftermarket one.

The best thing you can do however is avoid using OD when towing and install a TRANSMISSION TEMP gage......

This way you know when the tranny gets hot.
I pull a 19' Bayliner, fully loaded with gas/gear and trailer its about #4000.........The tranny runs at 120 degrees in my truck, but it has gotten up to 180 on a large hill hot in the desert. That was too hot for my taste and the tranny fluid was burned.....

Synthetic ATF is supossed to be good till 275. Now I installed my gage in the cooler line because I wanted to get it installed, the gage should actually be installed in the transmission pan to give a more accurate reading.

I will be adding a small electric fan in front of my tranny cooler, so if it gets this hot again I can flip the 10" fan on for added protection.........

Keep it cool and you shouldnt have any problems.....

I put in a B&M cooler and a Perma-Cool remote filter with a temp guage for less then $130.00 in stuff and just a about two hours out of my Saturday.

Tranny Gage Install HELP!!!

I have a Autometer tranny gage and I dont have a clue how to install it. The instruction sayto weld the fitting in the tranny pan. I know there have to be a easier way or a short cut.

This is indeed the proper and accepted manner. However, less desireable methods exist with less accuracy.

My tranny gets close to 180 degrees after 15-20 minutes of normal driving.

The less desirable method is to place a T fitting in the transmission cooler line that goes to the cooler from the transmission (not returning back) and install your temperature sensor there. Just remember that you have to ground the sensor as it will not ground on rubber lines like the metallic sensor would on the metal tranny plate.

Also, the stacked plate cooler is highly recommended by aftermarket experts instead of the older tube and fin type cooler.
