92 eddie bauer 4x4
Hey guys,

I've been reading for a while, new to posting. I'm looking into buying a friends 1992 explorer eddie bauer 4x4. I've been doing all the maintenance on it for the last 5 yrs, so I know its taken care of. However, it has a trans problem. The initial problem showwed up a year or so after cottman fixed it, wether rebuilt or replaced not sure, but they did it in one day. It used to hesitate and then go into gear; Reverse and Drive. Now if you put it into reverse or drive and you have to bring the rpms up for a few seconds to get it to get moving. Once its moving you can hit the gas pretty hard and it feels like it slips a little but its got good power.

From what I've read I'm thinking its the seal in the reverse/1st servo. I haven't gotten it fast enough to hit second I think. I tried in a parking lot, but it wouldn't hit second. If I put a valvebody kit in it and replace the seal, you guys think it would be ok? Whats else may cause this? I would like to buy this since I've been taking care of it, but really don't want to get too much $$ into it. I'd be using it for a trail vehicle. Also what is a double lip upgrade? Is something autozone will know about if I ask them for it??

Thanks alot,
Ryan

check the fluid level, my friends bronco II had the same problem, and it was the fluid

If it's not the fluid level, do a band adjustment. If that doesn't help you'll have to get your hands dirty.

Reverse/low servo D rings, valve body rebuild/improvements...

If you get the eddie cheap, who cares if you end up having to do a rebuild, there are a few threads as a guide.

Welcome to the site!

Thanks

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking it was fluid level also, but when I checked it, it showed fine. However the last time it was driven it did have fluid residue on the back door. Its really weird. Maybe I'll just put a quart of ATF in it and see if it helps.
