So I have a 2001 Ford explorer sports trac and just had filter changed and everything was running great then out of know where it stopped shifting no warning nothing, where would I begin to look for what could cause transmission to just stop shifting when it was shifting just fine

Check the wiring under hood.

Look at wiring which might be disturbed during air filter change. Check throttle position sensor wiring

Then, try this

Check all fuses under hood, and in cabin. Owners manual has fuse locations, double check transmission fuse.

Check trans fluid level

I don't have one in there

Have you checked fuses? If you click link in post 6 you'll see how to find both fuse boxes. 99 should be close to 2001. 4x4 or 2wd.
