what makes the transmission downshift while you are slowing down? is it an electrical component? or is it something inside the transmission also?

sometimes my explorer won't downshift all the way to first, seems like it will start off in second gear sometimes, but when i put the shifter lever to 1 it will go right into the 1st gear no problem... and same with the second gear, no problems with that either...

but other than that transmission shifts great, this is my only first problem with the transmission... no flashing O/D light either

I have a similar problem. 2001 Sport Trac auto 4x4 1st gen. Seems to up shift fine. But once in a while feels like it has not down shifted into first when starting from a light. When at 45 going up hill and needs a little more power, it will not down shift (feels like it won't come out of overdrive) unless I really have my foot in it. But at 65+ in cruise control and it comes to a hill, it will come out of overdrive and down shift as it should. No lights flashing/check engine.

Also I do have first gear engine braking. Any ideas????

The computer tells the valve body to down shift when the right parameters are met, like speed and engine torque and etc. If there is a problem in the valve body, solenoid sticking or valve sticking the down shift won't happen, could also be problem in the trans. The computer knows if the down shift happened or not and if it didn't after a couple times it usually flashes the OD light indicating that a problem happened in the transmission and it stores a code. I would check for a code even if the OD light isn't flashing. If the fluid and filter hasn't been changed in awhile I would try that also, as that might be all that is needed.

ohhhhhhh dang that's what I was thinking. I did have the codes read at the time of a fluid and filter change, no codes then about 6 months ago. Trans has been doing this for about a year. Guess I'll have to go inside and see what I can see. Hummm just a thought, could the TPS have a ill effect on the down shift. and not throw a code?

thanks PopRichie
