Transmisson wont shift into 2nd by its self

I can shift it into 2nd on my own but when i put it in drive i have to let off of the throttle and then it shifts into 3rd. I cant figure out what is the problem. I have a 96 X V8 need any help possible

Throttle position sensor maybe?
