Ok so I know that Uhaul won't let any of us with a Ford Explorer haul one of their trailers. I may need to use a UHAUL trailer one of these days, and I wouldnt need one of their trucks. But what about those people with Mercury Mountaineers? As far as I know they get to use Uhaul trailers. And the Mountaineer is very similar to the Explorer. So what makes their cars (in the means of they can haul Uhaul trailers) any different than ours (explorers)?

Less of them have crashed. Less of them were made too. :-) Soccer mom's love Explorers.
Just do what I did. Go down and rent the trailer with another vehicle (in my case my Oldsmobile), tow it home and switch. If you show up with another vehicle and they don't tell you, you can play dumb.

Yes it is pretty crappy
On the uhaul website, you can get quotes on renting trailers
It will ask for your vehicle type

Enter an Explorer - and it wont let you proceed
Enter a Mountaineer and you're good to go
Enter a Mazda Navajo and you're good too

make sense? Hell no!
But there were considerable less Mountaineers and Navajos sold therefore less of them crashed.

Other options are slim too...
Around here, Budget does have some trailers.
There's also Nations Rents or Sunbelt rentals

I rented a trailer from Sunbelt just a few months ago. I was upfront and told the guy I had an Explorer.. he said "So?". Explained to him about uHaul.. he had no idea..

It's because the Mountaineer name was never brought into the lawsuits. It's the same exact vehicle as an Explorer. U-Hual is to damned stupid to realize this. And as far as I know it there was only one rollover that involved a U-Haul trailer. U-Haul was just pissed because Ford drug them into the lawsuit.

Personally I would not rent one of their beat up, never maintained, POS trailers to begin with.

Me too, Im bitter... The few trucks Ive needed in that last few yrs have been from other companies.

Hmm... Sunbelt... Never thought of there. I wonder if I put mercury logo on my explorer and switch out the explorer for mountaineer if it'd pass as a mountaineer.. :D
I just sent Uhaul a question of why the mountaineer can haul their trail but my explorer can't. I'll post the answer.

Its all statistics. They will let you pull a thousand pound trailer with a Civic (case of the tail wagging the dog) but not with a 4 thousand pound truck.

Explorers are victims of there own popularity.
