Anyone ever try to rent any UHaul trailer to tow behind a new gen Sport Trac? Their web site tells me they won't rent to be towed by our truck. Call to UHaul customer service confirms.

WTF?

UHaul's policy was implemented in 2004 & is still in effect.

U-Haul Forbids Trailer Rentals To Ford Explorer Drivers

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

"DETROIT (AP)--U-Haul is forbidding its stores from renting trailers to customers driving Ford Explorers, citing product liability lawsuits involving the popular sport utility vehicle, a newspaper reported.

U-Haul International Inc., North America's largest trailer rental company with more than 17,000 outlets, implemented the policy Dec. 22, saying it can no longer afford to defend the lawsuits, The Detroit News reported in Thursday editions.

"U-Haul has chosen not to rent behind this tow vehicle based on our history of excessive costs in defending lawsuits involving Ford Explorer towing combinations," the company told the newspaper, adding that the move is "not related to safety issues."

Joanne Fried, a U-Haul spokeswoman, declined to disclose how much the Phoenix-based company has spent defending lawsuits involving Explorers.

"The decision is not based on one accident," she said. "It's based on several different lawsuits going on for several years."

Ford Motor Co. spokesman Jon Harmon called U-Haul's decision "surprising and disappointing."

"This is all about runaway litigation and trial lawyers forcing businesses to make unfortunate decisions for fear of lawsuits," he said.

U-Haul was involved in a lawsuit that Bridgestone/Firestone settled out of court in September. It involved three college students who were injured when their Firestone-equipped Explorer overturned while pulling a U-Haul trailer.

Bridgestone/Firestone is currently trying reach an agreement on a $149 million settlement of 30 class-action lawsuits because of defective tires.

Although federal regulators have said there isn't enough evidence to show that the Explorer model contributed to the tire defects, many of the problem tires were equipped on Explorers."

If I ever rent from Uhaul, I'm going to pick it up with my wife's VUE and bring it back with my Explorer.
That'll put a smile on their face. :D

just get there collision insurance and take it to the demo derby before you return it!

The wrecks you rent already look like they've been pushed off cliffs.

Put F150 emblems on it and go rent.:D

Exactly. U-Haul is doing us a favor by refusing to rent us trailers. I saw someone sitting on the side of the highway last summer because the axle had come completely out of a U-Haul trailer.

Just Buy Mountaineer and you will be good to go :D

hes not joking ive rented one with my mounty and 9"" of lift.

U-Haul will sell and install a hitch on your Explorer but won't rent you a trailer ........ duh!

Does anyone know of a competitive trailor rental company other than UHaul I can try? I can't find one on the Internet . . .

Thanks.

U Haul really has no Competition when it comes to trailer rentals.

Only options are to find a local Company that rents trailers if you are doing a local move.

or find a trailer for sale on the down low, buy it, move and then sell it :dunno:

Here on the left coast Ryder is pretty large.

would do the same thing pick it up with my wifes f150 and bring it back with my trac

another option tell them its a sport trac and not an explorer. or try looking for a
Grand Rental station online in your area. There indepently owned and spread out all over. Dunno... Also try looking for a dump trailer rental place, Kind contractors use. I would think they may rent other types. Ryder rentals is still around here.

I found rental prices to be much lower at Ryders than Uhaul.

Anyone renting U-Haul before checking out Penske first is nuts. Penske has newer trucks, cleaner, just better vehicles.

While I agree, Penske and other are much better for renting trucks.. They are just as bad, if not worse when renting trailers.. You must rent their truck to use their trailer...
