2012 Explorer Limited
Got my 2012 Explorer Limited FWD right after Thanksgiving. It had 300 miles on it from the delivery drive. It now has 2900. If I extrapolate out to 12 months, I'm looking at around 20700 miles this year. That's really high for me (living in the same city as the last three cars I owned that averaged about 15k-17k per year).

I dread the thought, but is there any chance the 2012 Explorer (or my 2012 Explorer) has an odometer issue?

I guess my next step would be to find a route that's exactly X miles and drive it several times to see if the odometer says X or X+.

Thanks!

You aren't even at 3,000. Wait till you atleast hit double digits, because you coulda just drove a few extra trips without thinking about it. If you have an odo issue you can check it with a gps. If the speedo is wrong, then so is the odo.

The new Explorer is a great truck. You are simply just driving more.

I also had this issue. Very surprised at my milage in a month or two.. But i guess it must be just that, we love it and want to take it everywhere. Although an odo issue would be cool.

You could also monitor fuel consumption. Using the trip monitor set to zero at fill up. The results will give you how many gallons you use. Compare this to the pump. If it is off, you will see very high abnormal MPG.

lol its brand spankin new take to the dealer.

some gps could be off by a few mph when driving down on road. just wanted to let you know.

I have the same issue as you. I have tried to to monitor the odometer and at times I believe I have seen multiple digits flip. I continue to monitor but have been able to confirm. My mileage I feel is too high as well. It is seems to occur when the tenths click over to next mile which is normal, but I believe it is clicking multiple numbers at times. I will continue to monitor.

Kerrsy,

What and who are you quoting? Seems you have lost your marbles there my friend. Now take a deep breath and count to ten in Klingon or something. There are some weirdos on here let me tell ya.

Ohh I know. Just FARGIN WITH YA> YA FARGER>

Uhhhh.... I get the feeling I missed something.....

Thanks to everyone’s suggestion on this. I like the idea that you just like your new ride too much that you drive it more than you think. ;)

bobogator & dawhite,

Seriously though, I suggest using another device to measure your next drive. A GPS would work nicely. If you think the odometer isn’t reading properly, it should be checked by the dealer. Drop me a line via PM and I’ll be happy to help by sending the details to the Customer Service Manager in your area. Please be sure to include your VIN, contact info, mileage, and dealer name/state.

I’m not sure what happened either, VinceL; you’re not alone. LOL

GPS can be terribly inaccurate judging your instantaneous speed... but is extremely accurate over longer time and distances.

If it says you're going 20mph right now, it could be off quite a bit ... but if it says you just drove 20.43 miles on this trip, you can pretty well take that to the bank!
(So using GPS to check your speedometer isn't so great, but using it to check your odometer will work just fine.)

Based on my GPS, my speedometer reads about 2-3 kph faster than my actual speed when running the 20" stock tires, and reads 4-5 kph faster when running the 17" stock tires. Really noticed it when I put the 17" winter tires on and set the cruise at 120kph. I was being passed like I was in the slow lane. On a 600+ km trip that I do regularly, I noticed the odometer read 25-30 km more than the previous vehicles that I have owned.

There is definitely a calibration issue. I'll have it checked out the next time I'm in for an oil change.

I'm guessing that wasn't while on the Queensway at 5pm.:D

Did you take into account that the 17's have 11.7 more revolutions per mile than the 20's and your speedo will read 1.689% faster? I notice every Winter that the gas station I usually fill up at always seems further away.;)

On my old VW, I had an issue with the Speedometer and accuracy. It was my understanding that as a policy VW were calibrated a tad 1 to 2 mph lower to account for the size of the wheels and different revolutions per minute of tires. No one ever confirmed it and it was discussed on a VW board (google it on the VW Vortex site). VW actually had a TSB to address the issue and re calibrate the system.

My Camry shows 70mph on the gauges and runs 68mph on 3 different GPS units...

I have gone into the MFT diagnostics screen and compared what the speedometer said my speed was compared to what the GPS screen of the MFT diagnostics screen stated, and both were pretty much identical. But then again, it was the onboard GPS, will have to compare it with a dashmount GPS I have.
