I have my truck over at the shop right now. He's been doing some stuff to fix a sound coming from my front diff.

He has my front axel out, with the wheels back on and says it's okay to drive like this.... IS IT???

Could it be the driveshaft and not the axle that he took out?

definitely verify WHAT he took out.
if he took the CV shafts and whole axle assy out, then no, you cannot safely drive it. The hub/bearing assemblies will fall apart quickly.

if he just removed the front driveshaft, then yes, it would be safe. You just wouldn't have 4WD
