Used t-case - cost?

Oh you can do this. Its just a replacment job.

If you find one online you can get it shipped for about 75 bucks.

Got the part already from gmanpaint. It's sitting in my livingroom as we speak. :D

Removing the console might make the top bolts a bit easier to get to. After unplugging the connectors, it is pretty much a straight forward removal and replacement. Once you get to all the bolts you will be amazed how easy it is.
It will be very heavy and awkward. You'll need to be able to get under it and bench press it up into position. Take note of how you let it down, because that is how it will go back up. As silly as it sounds, the higher you can get the truck up on stands the better, as this makes it easier to get under the case, while under the truck.

Console meaning the main center console inside the truck? And yes, very familiar with the weight and awkwardness of this damn thing - like I told Burns, I have the replacement and it's roughly 80 lbs. However, if there's one thing I'm decent at, it's bench pressing, so hopefully it won't crush me to death.

go to car-parts.com and look at local junkyard in your state

he already has the t case :)

the v6 t case is a snap to stab into the transmission, you are going to be like, "thats it? "when you are done, two driveshafts, 6 bolts, a some lifting and prying, BLAMO done

1997 V6 t case SUCKS ASS
we have one too, its been on its last legs for 40K miles now
son in law has a 97 with 4.0L OHV POS 4r55e and the POS auto awd t case... everything but the engine needs to be rebuilt., lol I replaced the engine.
190K miles though, not bad for a $1500 beater!!

I plan to convert this 97 to a 5 speed and manual transfer case Muahahahahaa

Wait...first you said the v6 is a snap and then you said the 1997 sucks ass. I have a 97! Which is it, man! LOL  :(

I think he means its easy to change, but sucks ass as a transfer case. :p:

Wow, of course that's what he means...I must have inhaled brake cleaner earlier.

Anyone have any idea how many quarts of ATF this thing it takes? am I safe with 2 or should I get a 3rd?

IIRC, it takes about 1.5 quarts of ATF, I drained it once and refilled with Syn ATF..

Thanks man...I'm covered then.

Be sure to take and post pictures, I might have to do this someday. :p:

Yeah, I guess so then. I've just never had or heard a busted Tcase.

All 4405s will fail. Most let you know with the classic grind while coasting and no reverse. I would not recommend anyone replace one with another stock one. There are several upgrades from omega machine.

On a two door you need to take the speed sensor out of the tcase, it will not clear the gas tank skid plate while you rotate it into position. I don't think that is a concern for you though.

You can't use a socket and ratchet on the bottom bolt. It won't clear the tranny mount. Just use a wrench and leave the bolt sitting there. Unless that's just the M5R1? I think the tranny mounts are identical though.

Gentlemen, I am very worried. This may deserve it's own thread, but I'd rather hijack my own.

I was driving in the snow last night. The truck was doing it's normal popping, slipping, etc. in 4x4 - all good, what I expected, and what I am setting out to fix tomorrow with the new case. Then I pulled into a parking spot and went to back out and heard a horrible free-spinning noise when I stepped on the gas. I let off and it went away. I tried to reverse again with the same result. The noise sounded like something mechanical spinning freely. I threw it into 4wd high (I think it was in low) and backed out without an issue. OK, so I'm thinking to myself that this is still just the messed up case, which I will be replacing in 24 hours. Not a huge deal.

However, I just got back from my first drive on pavement since, and the truck is shifting strangely. When I first accelerate it's shifting hard, causing me to jump off the line. I also noticed that in idle at traffic lights, the truck is actually climbing up hills that I normally would just sit at or roll back a bit at. Is my transmission now f*cked? Could the two issues be related? What the hell is going on? :(

The reverse thing is a symptom of a failing TC. What happens is that the bearing supports in the case get "ovaled" out resulting in a misalignment of the gears. When you go forward, the gears stay engaged; when you reverse or let off the gas, the gears can shift out of mesh.

I dunno about the trans issue. If it is operating in "limp home" mode, the shifts will become more harsh and you should get a flashing OD light indicating that a trans code has been set.

My OD light has been flashing for 5 years...

Just took her out for a quick spin. Definitely something wrong. It's shifting hard, and 3 times in the first 20-25 MPH from a stop. :(

Long shot, but if the VSS isn't working right because of the TC failure, that would confuse the crap out of the PCM. Otherwise, I don't know how the TC would cause an issue with the transmission.

Sounds like a rebuild is on the way! With money I don't really have! YAY!

First things first, gotta tackle the t-case tomorrow...

I hope it's just the tcase man... good luck.

Alright guys, bear with me here.

It's been a long day, but I got the case swapped out and the popping and slipping issues from the old case are gone. Looking inside the old case, it looks like the chain had a ton of slack in it, so that was likely the cause. That's the good news.

The bad news, however, is that the truck is stuck in 4wd. Remember what I thought was the transmission shifting strangely? The issue was the truck was stuck in 4 low. It's now in 4 high as we speak, as I manually switched the shifter on the case into high. I figured it was a bad shift motor, but my buddy tested the motor with a power probe and got it to spin fine. On the way home (in 4wd) both 4WD and 4LOW lights were flashing intermittently - never seen that before.

So basically, since I threw it into my popping and slipping 4wd the night of the snowstorm, I've been unable to get it back to 2wd/auto. Is the shift motor also responsible for taking the truck OUT of 4wd completely or just switching between 4H and 4L? Why am I stuck in? Being that the shift motor appears to be able to function, what would be causing the lack of communication between the 4x4 switch on my dash, and the motor? It's just not getting the signal to switch from 4 high to 4 low. I checked the two fuses marked with "AWD" (#13 and #26 IIRC) in the owners manual and they're both fine.

Any insight, assistance, or wisdom you can offer would be greatly appreciated...Thanks again.

Could the shift motor not be putting out as much force as it needs to shift it? Any possible way the tcase you just put in has issues? Would a GEM issue cause this? Russ has gone through quite a few GEM's on his truck. (aklimited or whatever his screenname used to be..) Just some food for thought.

Shift motor has enough power, it's just not activating. I had it off and had my friend watch it while I switched fro auto to 4H and 4L. Motor didn't even flinch.

And I don't think it's the new case, because if you recall, this "stuck in 4wd" started yesterday, with the old case in.
