So you're telling dmgraz to keep his OHV stock because your stock SOHC SPORT is faster than a stock 5.0L?

Actual race or "I'm racing a random v8 explorer-on-the-highway-while-the-guy-is-talking-on-the-phone-and-eating-his-sandwich-and-oblivious-to-the-race" type of race. :D

The second one I'm sure. It doesn't matter if the V8 weighs more, it makes up for that in power.

I suppose an SOHC Sport with 4.10s would be decent against a 4 door 5.0 with 3.27s or something. Note: avatar caption

Well he's probably right. A SOHC Sport will be just as fast, or probably faster, than a stock 5.0L. However, giving dmgraz bad advice by telling him to keep his 4.0L OHV cause this guy's stock SOHC Sport is faster than a stock 5.0L is why he is being called out. For one, who would keep their 5.0L stock!? :p

im noot tellin him to keep his ohv, i thought he said he was goin to get an sohc..........and a stock v6 (sohc) has 207 and the stock v8 has 215 tell me how u think it makes up for is in power???

look at the torque specs buddy

I will draw them... brb

Well I found one already online comparing the two! What a coincidence! :p

Your only faster because your truck is so much lighter. If the 4 door and sport were the same weight, you'd lose every time. If you are ever planning on any real mods, or having any kind of fast SUV, the 5.0 is the way to go in an Explorer. The 4.0 can be built to be a nice motor. But, your always going to have a crappy tranmission, whether it is a SOHC or an OHV. Dollars to doughnuts a beat 5.0 would outlast a beat 4.0 SOHC. PLus 5.0 parts are everywhere, and there are a lot of tied and true setups.

first off that chart is just simply wrong.

Dyno02.jpg

those are black magics dyno charts from his website with just a kkm intake and a chip i was unable to find one for explorer 5.0 but if you find one feel free to post it.
but i would have to agree with that the transmissions are crap.
my friend has an explorer 5.0 with a flowmaster catback and i completly blow his doors in. he takes me up until about 25 then i just start pullin ahead pretty quick partly due to the fact that i have an extra gear than he does :p

But look how many more mods you have. If the 5.0 had as many mods, I don't think the results would be the same. I'll race any V6 Explorer

First one to their next tranny loses ;)

Dont be to ****y mine just bit the dust at 95K

Are you kidding?!? How... when... why??! :(

BTW... every time I've raced an OHV from about 0-70, I've been about 10 carlengths ahead by the time I hit the hazards (juuuust kidding about the hazards :p) For reference, I'm usually a little over a carlength ahead of SOHC 4 doors, and side-by-side with SOHC sports by 60.

That's cause I drew it. :p

I thought the, "oh look, I happened to find one online comparing the two" would have given it away. :D

ya i thought something was off but i have seen charts like that online for the tornado and stuff like that

first:
i say i got the best of both worlds with my SOHC 2door sport and 4.10 gears. Unless you're making a pure race truck i think thats the way to go..

but to get back on topic:
Keep the OHV. Yea everyone here says "just go 5.0" or "just get a rolled explorer with the 5.0 and swap everything"... but who wants AWD for offroading? seriously, i would take the OHV with the options of 4wd hi/low or 2wd over any 5.0L anyday just for that reason.

ok someones gonna respond "well then just change the transfer case and get the computer re-flashed or something"... but all these little "just get"'s add up.

Lesson: carlos hydrolocked his OHV.. he put in another OHV
i hydrolocked my SOHC twice .. im puttin another SOHC in this weekend.
= stick with what you got. Its not worth the times&money&customizing to do a swap, unless you know exactly what's involved and YOU personally want it.

So side from everyones rant here "4.0 is better, well 5.0 is better but the sohc compares, but the ohv is a workhorse".. just rebuild your engine like you're planning.

He's 2WD.

hmm; ok so 2wd, ohv, id assume no offroading like alec used to?

well then id have to ask if any of the V8 came in 2wd.. and if not; how hard is it to convert the entire system to the V8 AWD and is it worth the time/money still?

Sometimes i gotta remember that people dont wheel all the time so he might want awd too. Either way i still think the easiest/cheapest/most logical route for someone who isnt an "avid wheeler" or "avid racer" is to replace what they have with the same engine, tweaked for slightly more performance.
