Virginia Run Grozet/GWNF or someplace else

Josh said:
I want to but I want to install a front Aussie locker and rebuild the rear LS Diff before. I will be in the UK for a couple of weeks July/August. But after that I'm hip.

BoominX,
Do you know a guy that drives a blue 1st gen with a 4" lift? Saw it over at the Wal Mart on Nimmo Pkwy.

No idea. I know there is a blue 1st gen sport off the BLVD with 4'' suspention and front glass fenders for sale between rosemont and lynnhaven.

BTW: BL is done, its TALL

Resurrecting from the dead

Since I'm planning on moving out to VA I NEED to know where I can go wheel'n and who my new friends are LOL!!!!

Any help would be great.

Cheap camping.
Where to wheel, parks or free places
Where to go from parts, maint, upgrades, etc.

I also have an '87 zuk I was planning on building up this winter, but might be loosing all my contacts! :(

OK wake up! Well hows about it? Lets strt planning. I plan to order my Aussie locker next week. I'll make a trip to U Wrench it and pick up some spare drive lines. Also still need to rebuild my LS. Where/When???? September 11-24 is out for me though.

well I am game. When are you going to u-wrench it? I went the other day and there wasn't much good for 2nd gens. I plan on going again tomorrow morning.

2nd gens out there is rare. What time tomorrow you going I might head out there too. Hopefuly if I order my Aussie locker, it won't take long to get either. I may have to work tomorrow but not sure. I'll know tonight.

I'll probibly be out there early like 9am or so. I might go to the DMV instead to get truck tags BECAUSE I GOT ANOTHER TICKET for being to high.

My bugggy is back on the road so I am game for a run.

I was just there today. There is a 2nd gen sport sitting in the staging area waiting. does'nt look to have any damage. Must be a tranny or something. One guy said it will be out Monday, but he didnt look to sure. Probably just pulled a day from his a$$. I notice one with a tranny that appeared to be a remanufactured one. Usualy reman parts are painted. The tranny was painted gray.

Unclemeat
Since you are familiar with the area, mybe you would be the best to pick a spot. Would be nice if we could get 5 or 6 trucks to go. I am up for camping as well. Well if you call sleeping in the back of your truck camping. I plan to have a Aussie locker installed before I go.

IMO The trails around Harrisonburg (Rawley Springs) are the best for wheeling. The best for camping depend on what you like. Crabtree Falls is the most populated. South fork of the Piney Branch is nice if you want to camp next to a creek. Reddish knob is nice for mountian views. I have even found a nice mountian top cabin, but they dont allow dogs.

I still want to check out the trails at Crozet (I have no brain and love pain).

When you say best for wheeling, do you mean mud, rock, etc?

I heard Grabtree falls was closed have you been up there recently? Someone said that because of that tropical storm that dumped all that rain damaged the trail. Maybe Horseshoe falls. Does that sound familiar?

Mud boggin doesnt interest me much. I would like to try more technical stuff. Dont get me wrong though I do enjoy the occasional mud slinging.

Don't care about camping near populated areas, unless the Sweadish bakini team just happened to drop by. I'm good with primitive. Camping next to the creek sounds cool though.

I have not been to Crabtree lately. Rawley Springs trails not to difficult, but some of the more difficult in the GWNF. The trails are mostly rock roads, bumpy sections, some steep. There is very little mud in the GWNF, you are on top of the mountians.

I like the area around Reddish Knob for camping. The last time I went we camped on top of Flagpole Knob (I think). It is on top of the mountian about 3,000-feet up with a panaramic view. I usually just drive around til I fing a good spot when I am camping at the GWNF.

I believe Crozet allows camping. That is going to be the place to go for technical wheeling. I believe that they want $100 per group and want 3 to 8 vehicles.

When are you planning this run? If the timing is right, I'm in - GWNF area sounds about right.

I picked up an an Ex a couple of months ago that needed some work - got it back together and inspected, but not sure how reliable it's going to be. I've been out to that area before - some good trails, not too far for me, and sounds like a good run to see what this thing has.

I'd probably bring my kids along (ages 10-13) and may be interested in camping one night, depending on when you plan to run the trails.

thanks...

Count me in.

'course I don't have a job yet so that could change things!

Well since it seems that we will have a mix of vehicles, from lifted 2wd and 4wd to stock height(Correct me if I'm wrong) Then we should go some place that has a little bit for everyone or challanging with bypasses.

Unclemeat, you seem to have the most knowledge. Maybe you should be the one to choose? Also, I don't want to seem paranoid, but I do not want to go anywhere iffy or illegal. I have had trouble in the past with trasspassing, and I don't want to stand in front of the judge as a repeat offender.

Everybody,
Reply with the times that are not good for you. As I said, I am out between the 12th and the 24th of September unless my work schedule changes. How does the first or second weekend in October sound?

I need 21 days in advance to request off. Other than that anywhere in Va I am game.

You work on the weekends as well or could you head up after work Fiday afternoon? I could wait and we could run up together.

Also, who has CB's and who does'nt? I have a CB and a spare in my garage. Just pick me up a burger at Wendy's or something and its yours. I also have Cobra FRS walkie talkies(2). They can be a pain to hear on the road but should work fine on the trails.

I work "usually" until 2 on fridays so we could go up one fri night. I have a CB somewhere in my place (just have to find it) but If not I work at radio shack so getting one isn't a problem.

Thats not bad. I left at 7 once and drove all the way up by Harrisonburg. If we left by 4 or 5 that wouldnt be to bad.

RIght now I have no plans and no job but by girlfriend works in Fork Union until 3:00 to 5:00 on Fridays. We're both game.

I have a working CB in my X and a non working one in the Zuk. I perfer to wheel the zuk since I don' t have to worry about damage at all.

I might be interested depending on when/where we go. I'm taking vacation Sept. 11-18 and will be hopping around Waynesboro/Harrisonburg hiking/camping. I'm mostly stock with open diffs now, but am going to try to be on 31" m/t's with F150 spacers/shackles and manual hubs by then. So as long as its not too difficult I should be in.
