I have a 94 X completly stock and it is in need of a fresh motor. I can't decide if I should rebuild the 4.0 auto with 150000 on it or go with 302 swap. Please vote for one and the one wins is the one that I will go with. HELP....

no displacement for replacement or something like that LOL

150K miles is half life for the OHV 4.0L
the 4.0L makes as much torque as many 5.0L drivetrains, so be careful with your selection.

What 5.0L drivetrain would you be using?

i have in my possesion a jasper 302 long block .and have asked about the swap and what all in takes ...to make a long story short ....

go v8 =
bad > you got to buy different transmission /computer/wire harness's/maybe a little fabracation /longer time to convert over/more money

good> better hp /more transmission options /more engine options/about same mpg

stay v-6 =
bad > you got less hp than a v-8/less options transmission wise/less engine options

good > cheaper to do plus it's all a matter of getting a new v-6 and drop it in the truck in no time flat

really boils down to one thing ....

how much money do have to drop in it .;)

95 F150 long block mid 90s Mustang intake ECM for manual car with c5 with c4 upgrades BW1354..

410 and seth can tell you all about it ,hell they gave me so much info on it that if i had all the parts all together i could most likelly get started already.i'm still in the process of getting that jasper 302 up to the house so i can start to work on it .

good luck on whatever you decide on .

Hell yeah thats a GREAT setup
Locating the C5 would be the hardest part
Using a manual shift 1354 is a good idea, have to locate that also
You can also use the much cheaper and readily avail 1354 e shift, with a home brew shifter....

look into reverse manual valve body for the C4 with the gate shifter = sweet

I vote this route 100 over the mazda 5 speed / clutch internal slave cylinder / plastic and also the can be rebuilt well but usually not A4LD

I'd say drop a V8 in it if you plan on a lift and big tires or you're looking to make it fast...or turning it into a hauler.

Otherwise on a stocker and especially a daily driver, the V6 makes more sense.

Keep in mind a 4.0 SOHC swap is possible too.

I have a 87 ranger with 3in body and 3in susp. Lifts that I will put on the X if I do the 302 swap, to save heater box troubles.

no displacement for replacement

i said this to a friend this past summer
his reply
"not unless i go forced induction..."

let's talk super chargers!!!! lol

I tossed around the idea of a 5.0 swap, but to be realistic I just didn't have the time or money to justify doing one. The 4.0 is a torque monster and with as much money as you'd spend just for parts to do a 5.0 you'll have one mean V6. Not to mention I heard some company is coming out with a supercharger kit for the OHV motor in a year or so, forget which one but they currently have a SOHC kit. I'll save my pennies for that

aflkjawer what? homebrew? am i missing out on something cool? idk

for all the mpg guys.. my awd 302 gets better gas mileage than my part time 4wd 4.0 would going downhill with a good wind at its back being towed. with that said though, they money and time needed for a 'good' v8 swap is something alot of guys dont have, me being one of them. which is why i opted for a low mileage (since when did 90K miles become low mileage? idk but its the lowest i could find) 4.0 replacement.

keep us updated on which route you go, and good luck!

Thanks for info guys! I guess I'll just flip a coin. I will post the out come in a day or two.

302 is more fun. 4.0 is easier.

For the money it would tAke to go through the 4.0 and make it worthy of the super/turbo. + the cost of the acuall charger and kit. (guaranteed to be well over a grand unless you home brew it.) you could swap in a v8.

If I wasn't building up my motor my swap would have been done in October.

I say, find you a good motor. One you KNOW runs well. And drop it in. Should cost less than 2 grand.

Unless your not equiped to do the swap. (with either tools or skills.) it's nothin to be ashamed of. Lots of people just don't have the skillset for that kind of thing.
