They did. It falls under manufacture defect. Cracks in the seem sealer that ford used falls under the manufactures defect clause.

Are you under the 3yr/36 bumper to bumper still? As stated, regardless of whether it falls under a defect or not, leaks are not covered... a water leak is a water leak... How they are covering it if you are outside the 3yr/36k is beyond me. not one person has had it covered under a Ford ESP because of this. And unless you pay extra for the $0 deductible, you would be responsible for the deductible ($100 is standard).

I was turned down by Ford Motor Co too. I have the third row water leak that is WELL documented here. The dealer body shop was acquainted with the "issue". The work quote they gave me was for about $800 to $1200 to address the leak. I asked if I pay this money do they guarantee I will never have this leak again they said they cannot give that guarantee. Why the hell then should I pay to have it fixed ?? Screw Ford Motor Co they have lost me as a customer. I am going to sell this lemon off to someone else and buy a Subaru.

Without reading back, do you know for sure where the leak is? If tailgate or seam I can see it being expensive, but if roof rack that's a 20 minute job with some sealant for someone who has done it before.

I'm still under the certified preowned warranty. All my leaks are coming from the third row seatbelts. I have a power liftgate. So far they have sealed the corners, by the hinges and going down. They are using outside air to help pressureize the cabin. It seems like this is a Dam effect. You plug one hole and another one opens up. The leak was on both sides no it seems to be localized to the passengers side. From what I can tell the headliner is not getting wet. All the water is coming down the seatbelts in the third row. I am worried that the roof rack is leaking under it. They are trying to avoid taking that down and removing the pillar trim. I have a gut feeling that, that is going to happen anyway. They also siliconed the wiring bundle for the power liftgate. Can anyone tell me if water is getting in where the washer hose is? My service manager thinks that might be another area that is leaking he just can't confirm it. It is very easy to pull that out of the hole. Almost like its not sealing properly. Please confirm if you can.

My leak (3rd row seatbelt, passenger side) was likely coming from the roof rack.

I bought my Explorer used, it appeared to have been in before for leaks. The seals at the top on both sides have black goop on them.

I took off the luggage rack, added new rubber washers, silicone sealer, and teflon tape on the bolt threads. Cost me less than $10, and about an hour of time going slow.

The leak is gone (for now, hopefully for good). I'm pretty confident it was a bolt on the rear passenger side of the rack. It had rust/discoloration down the whole length of the bolt in one or two spots. The other bolts were all clean.

I think if you read back through this thread you'll find that most leaks that resulted in water running down the 3rd row seat belts was caused by water leaking in around the roof rack anchors.

The first time Ford fixed my rear hatch - it showed rust and seals were lifting on the inside rear hatch seam on the top directly in the middle of the glass. It had to go to the body shop for repairs & repainting. More recently my truck leaked again from right rear seatbelt assembly & its presenting from roof rack/rusted screw holes. I wonder now if it started at the roof rack 1st & it found its way to the rear hatch 2nd. They've had my truck for last 2 weeks.

Water in the floor RS

My wife has a Saab 93 Aero. She was getting water on the carpet and they could not find the source of the problem for over a year. Finally someone figured out that there is a hose that drains the sunroof somewhere that is suppose to take the water and I guess shoot it down to the road....well it was clogged and split and leaked water into the front passenger carpet. Not only did they fix it but they removed all the carpeting in the car, front and back, and replaced it with new factory carpeting. They did the right thing, mold can be nasty!!

Hope yours is quicker and easier to find....do you have a sunroof?? ;)

Same problem with Volvo xc 90 No drain plug on the floor

Maybe I should stay away from explorer, I'll go for no sun roof

It doesn't matter where it leaks in from, mine leaked from the rear hatch and then side seam and they all run down the 3rd row seatbelts. BTW this week Ford paid my good friend $10,000 his atty. $9,000 to walk away from the lemon law suit they had for their Explorer :)
Unless you have plugged moonroof drain tubes in which case the water ends up on the floor of either the front or second row.;)

I still haven't had this leak fixed. My dealer is trying everything. He introduces air into the system finds where it bubbles then seals it. My rear hatch compartment looks like frankenstiens monster. They have yet to dive into the roof rack. I really think that's where they are going to find the main leak.

This is all very frustrating. I've had tons of problems with my 2011 ford explorer. If Oklahoma had a used car lemon law then I'd definitely be pursuing it. Currently I am experiencing the leaking issue as well. Every Time it rains our spare tire well gets water in it. The dealership wanted $350 just to diagnose it!

Welcome to the Forum.:wavey:
I guess it would be difficult to tell how long this has been going on if it wasn't noticed when you got the Ex. A leak may take some time to diagnose since there are various areas where it could come from. Even members who have had the leak 'fixed' found that it really wasn't. Split seams, roof rail attachments and moonroofs seem to be the main culprits with the rear roof rail attachment areas being the most common. Most dealers use a 3rd party specializing in this sort of thing to do the repairs so since you're footing the bill it may be an idea to seek one of them out. I believe some are mentioned in this thread. Good luck.

Joined forum for this reason. My 2013 Explorer leaks down the 3rd row seatbelts. Ford said it's a body seam leak and they'll have to replace it and repaint the back of the car. Service says they've already had 3 other cars in with the same problem. Ford says extended warranty will not cover. I've called Ford corporate and got a case number. Went a month with nothing but the dealer saying they were waiting to hear from corporate. Called corporate today and found out my case was closed!!?? Talked to manager who said Ford will not cover leak but he will call dealer to help me get car fixed. I can't understand how this is not covered. The leaks are all over you tube and these forums. It's obviously a problem in the construction of the car!! So frustrating!! If this isn't covered, this will be the last Ford I own.

Welcome to the Forum 3odie.:wavey:
If you check the Premium Care Extended Warranty brochure you'll find that 'Water Leaks' are NOT covered. The excerpt below was taken from the Not Covered list.

Generally Covered by Your Auto Insurance –
Examples include: fixed (non-moving) body parts, bumpers, glass, moldings,
ornamentation, paint, rust, sheet metal, structural underbody framework,
side and rear view mirrors (glass and housing), water leaks, wind noise,
weather strips, wheels, wheel studs, wheel covers, convertible top and bow.

I would ask the dealer for a written guarantee that the leak is fixed. Many leaks that caused water to run down the 3rd row belts also came from the area where the roof rail was fastened to the roof. The seam issue I believe appeared later.

Also, please add the year and trim level (Base, XLT, etc) to your profile so it always shows in the margin. Thanks.

Peter

I have found the leak on my 2013 explorer limited.
It is coming from the hatch door hinge, the bonding material is cracked, possibly due to the body flexing when the hatch is opened and closed. But I poured water on the pass side hatch hinge, and the dripping inside right above where the seat belt trim piece would be.
I have pictures, but I can't figure out how to post them. I will be taking it to my body shop tomorrow to have them repair it.

I would rather have a leak specialist fix it, I doubt a body shop will find all the areas leaking.

I just need the body shop to fix it. I'm a mechanic (not a ford mechanic) pretty much I point to what needs to be repaired and they fix it up. i send all my found water leaks to the body shop. They are pretty good. Haven't had any come backs from them on water leaks in the past couple years I have been using them.
