Weighing my options: V6 or V8

FIND: I have crawled all over that engine trying to find that damn exhaust leak, its had EGR issues and it made a noise like a leak and I fixed that, but after i fixed it, it started making another noise like it. I took it to a mechanic an he told me it was an exhaust leak -but i haven't found a crack or anything in the manifold. So i figured it could be the gasket. As for the oil leak, it has been there since I got the truck. I know it's coming out the driver's side of the engine and its covered in old oil so i can't pinpoint the exact spot. The valve rattle when under heavy throttle, such as climbing a hill. It sputters in the same instance, but I don't know what to contribute that to. As for the Harmonic Balancer, it makes a ghastly noise when under load, for instance when i cut on the a/c or put it in gear. Not a squeal or screech, but a kind of grind/fart type noise and the belt bobs rapidly. Excuse the lack of better word (fart). The transmission leak seems to be chronic for my truck. the previous owner had it rebuilt after he blew it pulling up stumps with it. It leaked, but my dad found a cut hose and replaced it and it was fine for a few months, but now its leaking again. Thank you for your thoughts! :)

FIND: I'm not that inclined. True! haha :P

There is a pull-a-part junk yard roughly an hour and a half from you in Mobile... They have some of the best prices for used parts. It is my preferred place to "shop".

If you are dead set on keeping your current truck. I'd fix the engine issues as suggested, and ditch the automatic for a 5 speed and don't look back. The A4LD is junk from the factory anyway. Mine is factory 5 speed and love it. Like you I don't plan on getting rid of mine unless something catastrophic happens say -- a total loss accident. Even then I would strip all I could to put on the next Explorer. I have many different mods that I like done to mine.

However I wouldn't complain about issues and then dispute the suggestions given, you just make things more difficult that way. We're here to help, and I get you won't like every suggestion given to you, but don't be an @$$ about it. Just remember you did ASK our OPINIONS.

Since it's a daily driver I'd just find a used engine and trans with a warranty. Swapping a stock motor for a stock motor isn't very hard, just time consuming and needing patience and attention to detail.

When your Ex isn't a daily driver.. 5.0 :D Mine will eventually get a 5.0 and a C4, but again I don't rely on it for transportation; I have a Japanese clown car for that :D

If i dispute, i apologize, and yes i did ask opinions for my truck but not about me.

Nah, I don't think you need a new engine, just a tune-up. Change your fuel filter, have your injectors cleaned, plugs and wires, you know, normal maintenance. The rattle under load is actually a fairly common problem for the first gen 4.0, it is generally not valves, but lifters or rockers. I have heard of some guys getting that loud tick from their coil pack even. Sometimes though, it is just a timing/mixture problem though, which can be caused by exhaust leaks before the O2 sensor, bad O2 sensor, plugged injectors, or EGR problems. You solved your EGR problem, now you need to find your exhaust leak, which can sometimes be difficult. Honestly, if you spent a while with EGR leaks, I wouldn't even be surprised to hear your O2 sensor went bad. Besides, O2 sensors are only designed to last for 60k-100k miles. They usually last a lot longer, but 60k-100k miles is the service interval.

The places to look for exhaust leaks are where one pipe meets another. On the passenger side, the manifold to y-pipe joint is pretty easy to inspect, on the drivers side, it is a little harder. They are sealed with exhaust doughnuts, and those things do deteriorate over time. Under the car, you have a flange where it joins the catalytic converter, and after the cats, you have another joint that is sealed using an exhaust doughnut. Your last place to look for an exhaust leak is where the manifold meets the head.

The noise and belt bobbing problem, that sounds like a bad idler pulley, but the best thing to do is to pull the serpentine belt off, then see that all the pulleys spin freely. Before doing that, you can check that your fan clutch spins freely, and look for large cracks in your fan. When your vehicle is off and cool, your fan should be able to spin freely with the belts on.

The oil leak.... Go to the store and buy a couple cans of engine degreaser. Get your engine nice and warm, apply engine degreaser, wait, then rinse. Repeat until the engine is not greasy. From there, you should be able to find leaks. It is not unheard of for an old engine to seep a little bit of oils out seals, and a little seepage isn't going to hurt anything, but it is good to nip those things in the bud when they are discovered. Another good thing about cleaning your engine, it will make those exhaust leaks easier to find. If you still can't find or feel an exhaust leak, you can visually inspect the engine for dark colored streaks of carbon. You find one, you found your leak.

You aren't mentioning any problems that sound head gasket related, so I am pretty sure you can rule that one out.

Actually, most of your problems could possibly be caused by your exhaust leak. You may also have a bad O2 sensor. When you have gotten your engine nice and clean so you can determine where your leaks are coming from, the next step will be to do a tune-up as soon as is financially convenient. Plugs, wires, fuel filter, injectors cleaned and probably replace your O2 sensor, since chances are, it is bad anyways given the number of miles on your truck.

Your transmission issues..... I usually don't actually recommend DIY tranny swaps to novice mechanics, because transmissions are heavy, and they are awkward parts to lift without the proper tools and experience. I can lift an A4LD into place by hand, but I still use a tranny jack or a jack with a tranny adapter on it, just because if you slip, you are underneath the transmission, and it has the potential to cause you major booboos. I would recommend just having a shop swap transmissions for you or rebuild yours, but that would cost around $1500. The only better advice I can give you, make friends with a gearhead, and buy lots of beer.

One last thing.... Cribb, I so wish I could find 5 speed sploders or 5 speed 4.0 rangers around here. I'm up to 6 1st gens I have bought now for people or parts, still have yet to run across a 5 speed 4wd. I found one 5 speed sport, but it was 2wd. Not a lot of sports in this area though, I suppose if I could find more sports, I would probably be able to find a 5 speed 4wd.

i would swap for a v8. u can normally find good running old crown vics with a 5.0 302 for under $900. then u can normally sell a roller crown vic for $300 (derby queens) but thats just my opinion. it seems like u dont like the 4.0 that well over a 5.0 and we all know there r tons of mods for a 5.0 and it seems as gas prices arent a big issue either so goin with the 4.0 just doesnt seem like a winner. it would also probably cost more to repair everything listed than to swap engine and trans. i think u could watch craigslist for a cheap car with a 5.0 and be good as gold. i found my 97 exploder eddie bauer with 5.0 and awd for only $900. got it for a steal bc it needs a few things here and there. u just have to keep a look out. theres deals out there u just gotta be patient.

That sucks.... I seem to stumble across them a lot. It must be a southern thing.

I just ran into a guy a few days ago with a gen 2 sport 5 speed 4wd.

If I offended you I apologize as well.... nice rig by the way.... where on earth did you find such clean TAN limited seats?

I only find the ate up leather like you replaced or green/grey limited seats.

I have the tan cloth EB seats that are in pretty decent shape.

Hehe i stalked ebay. i paid for them too. over $400 with shipping, but that's better than the $700 it would have took to redo just the front ones. there is a pair of 99 heated seats from a limited on there (if they're still there). you just got to search VERY thorough like i did.

Cribb: I don't think it's a southern thing. 5speed explorers are few and far between where i live. i've seen all of one 5speed here. I think is cause we're too lazy to shift while eating our fried chicken. haha

I'll pass on the overall price... mine were free.... free is always good.

I thought it was rare, however within the first week of ownership I had found 3 more 5 speeds for sale. That was in NC where I used to live. Since coming to TN I have seen 2.

Haha I guess I don't worry about the chicken eating part while driving mine.

yeah, price and having to gut the driver's seat and replace all the memory mess with the wiring harness with the old one. I like the ole v6 for today, i just went on a 150 mile round trip and it got 24mpg at an average speed of 60mph!!! Explorers are marvelous road trip cars!!

FIND: I have found 3 manual trans X's within 2hrs of me on craigslist and 2 of them are 4x4. a 98, 94, 92. the 92 was the 2wd. All of them are sport models. Just figured I'd share. If interested it was in the louisville ky c-list.

V8...they make some good juice drinks too...lol

I have a rule to never travel more than 2 hours to buy a car, thanks for looking out though. Besides, I am not in the market for any more explorers at the moment. I just don't have the time or room to take any apart right now.

You got 24 mpg w/ the previously mentioned issues? Wow.

I beat mine by running pizzas and got 16.5 mpg on 203 miles all city. Not bad for over 200k.

I do not know if this was talked about, but if you plan to do a v-8 in your 94 look for 96-97 donors. that way PATS is not an issue.

Cribb, that thing has surprised me over the years with mpg. It went from getting no better than 12 to over 20 after i fixed the EGR issue. But for right now i'm trying to find a new rim. I got a bent one. :(

Thanks for the advice Kris!
