When I start my engine it makes a tick tick tick noise, it sounds really annoying. When idling it does it for a while, but then it stops after a while. I cant figure out what it is.

I was thinking it just may be your lifters you're hearing until oil gets to the top end on start-up...could also be worn push rods/rocker arms although you're saying it will do it at idle and then go away; typically if those were worn you'd hear them constantly. What motor do you have?

I am going to guess that you have the 4.0L SOHC...it is a very common problem to have the timing chain tensioner on those engines go, which could be the cause of the problem, yes replacing it or having someone do it is not the cheapest, but if your timing goes then...it can go down hill quickly to say the least...

yea 4.0 SOHC. How can I tell exactly if it is the timing chain tensioner. and that doesnt sound like an easy job to do either.
