gears dont give you more accelleration, they can help you get off the line but its a trade off
What gears do you have now?
Why do you want to change gears? bigger tires? towing?
Gears are expensive so its important to understand what ratio you choose and why, also to compare the $$$ to other mods that might be more cost effective for you.
there are many stock gears. your door sticker has a axel code mine is D4 which is 3.73 limited slip. or you can look at the tag on the differental mine says 3L73 i think there are 3.73, 3.55s, 3.05s and maybe 3.23 dont quote me on it. the lower the number the slower accelaration but usally better gas mileage.(unless you have bigger tires) the higher the number the more "grunt" off the line power you will have.
oh yeah my friend has a 85 olds cutlass with a 69 rocket 350. and with the stock 2.55 gears he ran a 18 sec 1/4 mile when he swiched to 4.11 he dropped to the 14 second range so they do make a differance but he cant really go on the freway because of his gears. he probabily has only 26" tires though. Last year i raced him on the back roads when he had is old gears and i had my old airbox. i got about 100 yards ahead then i hit about 60 and he passed me like i was standing still so if you want 0-60 go with 3.73 but if you want 60-100 use 3.05.
