Start by checking the code on the door tag, then research it online. Or you can crawl under the rear and there should be a tag on the rearend housing. It will have all the info on the rearend. Again you can research it online.

I saw the tag on the rear end but the mechanic that checked it out said that was just a part number. Would it directly say on that tag

If you asking what the differential size is, it's an 8.8.

If you're asking about the ratio, check the door sticker and compare it to this.

41 - 3.27 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
45 - 3.55 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
46 - 3.73 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
42 - 4.10 non-limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D1 - 3.27 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D4 - 3.73 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)
D2 - 4.10 limited slip (Explorer/Mountaineer)

If you're asking about the ratio, check the door sticker and compare it to this.
That will tell him what was supposed to be there. Sometimes people will swap axles for various reasons :)
