What years had this rear end???

Hi there folks. I'm looking to swap the 8.8 from an Explorer into my Jeep. This is what I'd like to know before I go hunting in the junkyards:

On what year Explorers can I find an 8.8 rear axle with disk brakes, 4.10's (4.11's?) and possibly a Trac-Lok?

Thanks

Skywalker, welcome to the site! Even though you own "another" offroad vehicle, you should find lots of useful info on this site and it's forums.

I believe all Explorers 95 and up have rear disk brakes. The axle is a Ford 8.8 31 spline. If you look on the sticker on the driver door end, you need this axle code: D2. That's with 4.10 gears and a Ford limited slip. Though if you're using the rear end for moderate to serious offroading I wouldn't recommend Ford's limited slip. Axle code 42 is an open 4.10 diff. I'd recommend getting this and putting an aftermarket locker or posi in.

Good luck! And I'm soon moving back to Houston, maybe I'll see you sometime!

i could be wrong but i thought it started in 96 or 97.

Nope. My Jeeper buddie just did this swap and he got a 95 8.8 w/disks.
