I think the rims I purchased have a crappy back spacing. Even with my air ride on my front tires rub the sway bar and the back ones rub the wells pretty good.

Does anyone make some 1/2" spacers? Also will they hurt anything or cause problems?

Hi Nitrous SSC:

There are numerous posts on this, but I'll give you a summary. Spacers can be broken into two categories.

There are spacers that are designed to fit over the wheel studs and simply sandwich between the hub and mounting surface of the wheel. I call them through-bolted type. Typically, these are about 1/4 - 3/8" thick or so. Any thicker, and the wheel nuts won't have sufficient thread engagement on the studs. Regardless, these depend upon the studs to accurately center the wheel, which is not the most accurate method. This can result in excessive vibration. Also, they put more bending load on the outermost end of the studs, which might lead to failure.

The other category of spacers are generally 1" thick or more. I call them bolt-on type. They have holes machined in them and come with a set of nuts so that they can be bolted up to the hubs. They also have a set of studs pressed in so that the wheels can be attached directly to the spacers. Better quality ones are machined to accurately center on the hub flange and have a machined lip to accurately center the wheel. These are called hubcentric. Generally, hubcentric spacers like these are considered far stronger and safer than through-bolted spacers. In my opinion, you should only consider this type.

More to your question, 1/2" spacers will be difficult to pull off, because that is too thick for the through-bolted type, and too thin for the bolt-on type. You could have something custom made, and install longer studs, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Some will say all spacers are bad, but I have experience with hubcentric spacers (on my Mustang), and they work well if they are made correctly. I recommend H&R spacers. Perhaps you could live with using 1" thick hubcentric bolt-on spacers.

Other than the failure and vibration risk with using cheap spacers, the only other real issue that comes into play is if you change the effective wheel offset significantly from stock. If that happens, the wheel bearings will see much higher loads, and probably fail prematurely. However, it sounds like you will be moving your wheel offset closer to stock than they are now, so you should be fine.

Incedentally, some people refer to bolt-on spacers as adapters, just in case you want to expand your search a bit. Technically, though, adapters are spacers that are used to change the bolt pattern so other types of wheels can be used.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
John.

John thank you for making things crystal clear :)

What am I gona find price wise for some 1" bolt-ons? And what are some good sites to check?

Matt - look in the group buy forum. Someone was offering a deal on spacers a while ago, there were lots of pictures, info, and prices. I'm not sure if the deal is still going.

Cool I'll poke around in there too.

OUCH!

I found a set on ebay that are the same kind for 150 for all 4.

from what i've read and what was posted in my thread I started asking "why are wheel spacers with their own studs the devil?" I have come to the following conclusions:

your studs will crap out and shear off
your wheels will fall off
your truck will go boom
your paint will peel and make it look like an Aztek
your first born child will get purple spots on him/her
your 2nd born child will get horrible SAT scores
your wife will run off with an italian pimp named guido
your dog will fall in love with the cat
and you will develop the worse case of ear hair ever seen by mankind

and thats all in the first 2000 miles of having them on your truck...

moral of the story, I ended up not putting them on and I rub my sway bar at full lock...

DOGS FALLING IN LOVE WITH CATS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh no this can not be !!!!!!!!!!!!!

It MUST be stoped !!!!!!!

an Aztec? Oh **** don't go there.

Ok I'll just stay in the "I rub my front swaybar" club.

Hey if you pick up those spacers on ebay (the 4 for $150 from discountautowhatever) let me know how they work out. I've been keeping my on them and have been trying to get in touch with the owner of the company but no luck. They look like a decent deal. Keep me posted!

Hmmm...

It was a redneck named Henry, not Italian, but...
Yeah. I really hate the ear hair...

However, none of the other things have happened yet, though the cat has been acting a bit strange lately. Maybe if you just use two spacers on a Mustang you don't suffer all of the side effects.

John.

haha...

Hey Spartanburg, SC... anything to do up there? I think i might move to greenville/spartanburg in january (if i get an internship with BMW)

Nitrous... i'm sure you're truck would be fine with wheel spacers, many people use them. it just seems that even more people have a "well my brother's cousin's friend's brother bob had this happen" stories involving wheel spacers... so who knows :monkey:

This happened to rob from ********* with the "washer" style spacers:
DONT DRIVE A DAMN MILE ON THEM!

Well as you all know I had to get wheel spacers for the front to avoid the rubbing issues. I installed them and they worked great....but then I started to have some weird vibrating type effects whenever I would drive and now today was the worst...I finally got very concerned because anything over 40mph and the wheels would vibrate so violently that my rear view mirror, and steering wheel would shake....the wheel would pull in random directions...freaked me out. Sounded like the wheels were wobbling anytime I would go around corners.

So I stop at the fire station to get the tools and lo and behold, the front two wheels lugnuts were more than halfway off! A couple were even closer to popping off!

This is insanely bad timing because I have to make a long road trip today and now I am very nervous about it. I do not have another option or vehicle to use. I tightened the lugnuts as tight as they could go and I did the same when I first installed the wheel spacers. So I am very very concerned about this. Unfortunately I do not have enough time to take the front two wheel spacers off. I am not running wheel spacers in the rear.

I highly recommend no one runs spacers no matter what!!!!! There is no reason to. I am going to get rid of my front two Cobra R's and I am going to get 255 wheel width Cobra R's so I will not have rubbing issues or have to worry about spacers. I refuse to put up with this. It is VERY VERY unsafe and I am astonished that the lugnuts came out that loose when I have done UNDER 75 miles of driving since the installation!!!!
...
...
...
I was only 20 miles outside of my destination when suddenly it got the most violent ever, the entire trip I was 110% fine, no vibrations, nothing.....then suddenly I heard a CRACK and it sounded like something broke off...my car started vibrating and shaking VIOLENTLY so I slowed down, drove on the shoulder for the remaining 5 miles at 25mph...I get to my sisters house (where I am at now) and THREE LUGNUTS *WITH* THE STEMS SNAPPED RIGHT OFF on the front passenger side wheel!!!!!!

There are now only two lugs holding that wheel on. Needless to say I have not drived an INCH since I arrived. My Explorer is getting towed by a flatbed by AAA tomorrow and it is going to the dealer where I bought my Explorer from which I am like family to with the owner. It is only 30 miles from here. They are going to have to replace the entire passenger side front hub and possibly the drivers side as well. All the lugs on the front drivers side hub were more than halfway off.

I can't reiterate this enough guys, all the lugs were tight as could be and even before I left for this trip. There is no if's, and's, or but's about it. I am not trying to say "oh I am innocent." But I am saying that I know what I did and I know they were as tight as could be without being tightened too much. I think like either Tom or Jeff said about the wheel being mounted improperly, i.e. not completely even seems to be the ONLY logical explination. But I refuse to run spacers ever again.

I don't plan on doing the washer type. I never planed on them. I've already seen how bad they screw cars up on mustangs.

I want ones that bolt on and have their own studs.

Wheel Spacers

If anyone is interested, I have a used set of (4) 1" five on five pattern wheel spacers that I used for spacing the stock wheels on my 99XLT with a set of ET style lugs to mount them evenly on the stock hubs. I bought them from truck Addons.com . Email me if interested.
