Wheel went one way, I went another

Got the truck back thisd evening.
The wheel is shot to hell, egged out the holes pretty good, insurance didn't want to cover the damage because they said I had the wrong lugnuts, the ones I have apparently are for metric, I forget the measurement, but whatever is closest to 1/2-20, which means they'll fit standard, but not perfectly. The adjuster was cool though and said he'd take care of it. 400 bucks out of my pocket just for the mechanical damage, but they'll send me a check for 300 plus whatever the body damage estimate is. 100 deductable is all I'm liable for. Shop torqued the nuts to 115lbs, I should be safe for the time being. I guess I'll be buying new wheels soon :P

So how the hell did you end up with five 13mm studs on only one wheel? And who's the moron at the tire shop that couldn't tell you had the wrong size lug nuts?? Yes, the 13mm nuts will go on, but it's usually pretty obvious that they're not the right ones...

As I understand it, all of the lug nuts for the wheels I have are 13mm, and all my studs are 1/2-20, apparently 4wheelparts sent me the wrong nuts when I got the wheels last year, so all the nuts I have are metric, and I need 1/2-20, and apparently not just any 1/2-20's, they have to match the wheel from the factory (unsure of that, sounds like BS), but they tried a few generic sets from autozone and they wouldn't seat properly.
I'm really curious to find out from anyone else that has had these wheels if they've had a similar problem.

With my new rims i used the stock nuts. I will never switch them out for aftermarket ones.

So I guess my next move would be to see if my stock nuts would work on my new wheels?
If thats the case then I wouldn't have to get a new set of wheels, just one new wheel, right?
I'm talking this out loud to myself to try to understand it, lol.
Are stock wheels lugcentric or hubcentric?
I'm very confused now, I didn't even think the stock nuts would work on aftermarket wheels?

they work, well on mine at least. Our wheels are lug centric as well as most of the aftermarket. Now ford superduties have hubcentric wheels. So they have to be careful they buy the correct wheel. Like i said before, i use my stock lug nuts with my aftermarket rims.

Are your stock lugnuts close-ended?
I can't remember if mine are, I'll have to check when I get home, I'm thinking they are, if so, I have to check the depth to see if they'll work.

I think that they'd work, but I was told depending on the thickness of the wheel at the hub area, my stock nuts may actually bottom out on the stud before tightening the aftermarket wheel to the hub, thats the problem the tire shop apparently ran into when using generic nuts from auto zone. Makes sense, I guess. :banghead:

they are open ended

Whoah Jim just now caught this. Glad you're okay. Good thing you weren't going any faster and that it didn't do anymore damage than what it did.

Yeah I'm okay, it could have been a lot worse!
I must be lucky :)

Damn Jim! I don't think I've ever zapped on lugs that weren't the right size... *scratches head* I think I'd know immediately if they weren't right, especially if the customer had brought them in with him/her. Glad you're ok!

(Ps, unlike most techs I know, I DO use torque sticks... I ain't getting held responsible for any wheels coming off on my watch!! :D)
