I just bought a 99 with SOHC engine. It has 100k miles and no service records. So I have no idea if it ever had a new chain and tensioner. How do I know if I should consider changing it before I have problems? I often use it in very remote areas hours from a garage or tow truck. So, I like to do preventive maintenance.

See your local Ford service Dept and request a history report on the vehicle using the VIN #.

History

I assume the history would only be for work done by a
Ford dealership. Is that correct?
Would it include work done by Ford dealerships in other states?

It will include any warranty work done on the vehicle by Ford anywhere in the country. But not all dealers are open to giving you that history. Not sure why some balk...but they do.
