Zhanx's SAS - HP Dana 44 on 37's thread

ok its a pita to grind down the welds on the axle.. this is starting to be a how not to short an axle thing. i need to grind and remove the passenger side and the drivers side i just need to grind down to adjust the camber dont need to remove it. And after two weeks of constant work i have bearly ground on the passenger side, got new discs to finish the job hopefully thing week will show a little progress. I need to change out a front main first. And since I need to replace the tranny no parts and it the project get pushed back more.. hope to have it complete by summer still tho.

You still need the 5 speed?

yes i do, just trying to get eh money. unexpected bills came up and now i need $$$

ok priced out everything to rebuild the front axle source at autozone for most of the parts. Will be looking elsewhere also. but it will cost 688.28 for a complete rebuild including a new passenger side shaft and gears. I'lll be posting the item price and website in a bit. Pricing the rest of the parts for the swap right now. After that is done will post the whole thing so if you got a site with a lower price let me.

Hows that front diff holding up in the mean time?

Still alive zhanx? I'm going to be doing a motor swap soon and your diff would be lovely to put in while im at it...

the front axle is fine. :) i know you want it man. but with my tranny dying and taking all my $$$ to fix that. The one good thing.. i got orders friday to korea :( i leave in july so now i have to pack up and move my wife home.

Update on the transmission. The manual transmission is in and working need to get the right boots / trim piece for the floor. the ones i have don't have enough room so i need to go with a stock duel manual one. Dash needs to be opened up and cover the old PNRD21. even though it runs and drives i think i need to change out the computer. time will time.

Back on topic. I finished cleaning up the axle. Will be finish grinding down the welds on the housing this coming week. Need to do both sides so i can change the c"s for steering and keep a good pinion angle.

You got the tranny in, sweet! Did you have any trouble with that?

The reason for the computer change, i was told, was because of the fuel curves on the shifting points, i don't know.

beats me too. right now the only thing wrong is the flashing od light. Had one issue the bottom bolts arent long enough other than that it is fine.

hey josh when i find what i did with the jumper you needed i be sending it. send me a pm in the mean time. I put it in a "safe" place so i wouldn't lose it.

ok time for an update.. tomorrow the axle goes under the knife and 6 inches comes off of it. no money for parts right now but i am at least starting this thing.

well its shortened. one step down.

Got any pics?

no josh i figured everyone's seen a shorten axle. basic did the same thing as savagewolf with a lot less problems.

First i measured and marked the housing where it should be when finsihed 6 inches shorter. then i ground off the cast end and ground it flat. used a air grinder with a diamond bit to make a grove in the portion in the tube tapped lightly with a hammer it fell out. I measured the distance it was in the tube, subtracted that from the first mark, tripled checked and cut it with the chop saw. rounded the end off, started the thing with a hammer and broke the press trying to finish (it was getto fab'd aways). Today i am gonna take it to a shop to get it finished.

Put the C in the oven 350 degrees @ 1 hour. It will go on alot easier that way. Or, take it to a machine shop. :)

maybe i should have had it in the oven longer.... it was fun to play with hot steel tho.

stripped the housing down to bare steel and gave it two coats of gloss black :), i was *suppose* to drop it off at teh machine shop today.. but no time so i just cleaned it and painted it instead will make it nice for them to work on it.

from these guys http://www.reidracing.biz/ hope them dont mine the link.. a little pricey but they are a bolt on.

? on the c's think i should wait to press them on till i get ready to set the camber? it would make the pinion line up better. a little hard to do tho.

Yeah wait till you get the pinion angle correct then set the inner-knuckles (or "C"s).

But those knuckles from Reidracing are kinda expensive ($460 for a pair).
I think I got my flat tops for like $80 and then had one of them machined+tapped for another ~$50.
But then again, you're going with the Ford 5 stud spindle so I dunno how that comes out price wise.

Mister Senator what side of the axle did you break again? if its the passenger side i happen to have one for sale. if one out of a 79 bronco will work for you.

Had the end pressed on. I know everyone said to wait and i should probably update the main page of this but i got the cast on radius arm c's and i am running out of time. So the fastest swap for me will be using coils and radius arms.

Only problem is the radius arms on the axle i got where junk so i didn't take them. michigan salt and winters + poor maint. = junk but i should have got them for cores.

I have to do a litttle research on this. But it should make this possible in may? either way if it dont get done by then i leave in july for korea.

ok now i have a line on an axle i should be able to pick up the 1st of may with weld on c's not cast... anyone need a housing shortend already? 100 bucks + shipping (just housing the other one is drum brakes
