You dont have to change carriers if you havent already bought gears. You can get a set of thick 4 series gears for the 3 series carrier.

you can interchange the 760x's with any 297 joint as far as I know, you dont need special shafts.

I got 2.5" jhonny joints with a cast on 1.25" shank for $35 from www.trail-gear.com It was about the cheapest I could find. Add the jam nut and weld in bung and it was around $53 each or so. I liked them better cause I dont have to weld a bolt on to them and risk warping the unit.
