Hey, I was just curious as to what people thought of doing a side out exhaust. I have a flowmaster 50 series with a cat back and I want to take the current tail pipe and cut it down and bent so it comes out the side right below the back door. Just curious if this is still street legal as well before I go through with it. I don't see why it wouldn't be.
Thanks

I was told here (in WA) it's illegal to come out that close to a door. Other places say it has to be behind the rear axle.

i have side exit, i am in illinois, i love it, i have a 50 series dual in dual out, and the two tips come out right behind my rear passenger door. so far i have had absolutly no problems, but you do lose some clearance if that means anything to you, and alot of ppl look, is yours a 5.0? the best part is when someone pisses you off, and you pull up next to them and pipe them, its pretty fun to watch, not that i encourage that, but its one thing i liked to do...

Do you have any pics of this? There doesn't seem to be enough room to pull this off with a muffler. So any pics would help alot!

Yes but mr Spindlecone on a Sport Trac that is legal.
The law says the exhaust must exit the vehicle after the passenger compartment. ON a SUV thats the back of the truck.

Thats just what the law says.
:P
I have plans to bring mine through the body, before the rear tire.

Am certain each state is differant. Only law on side exhaust in Kali is it cannot exit the side any higher than 22 inchs

No way, in emissions land you can do this?
I must check to see if CO's still got it on the books then, because it was illegal on my BII.

410 is correct... US DOT (which is federal law and trumps everyhting else) dictates that the exhuast must exit at or behind the rear axle on a passenger vehicle (what the explroer is)

it is legal on pickup trucks as the cab on a pickup truck is halfway between the tires...

i live in CA and just had my yota smogged, i have a flowmaster and a turndown that exits at least 6" in front of the rear axle.... my truck passed without issue, except the guy running the dyno didnt like how the probe had to be placed way close to the dyno rollers.....

as far as it being legal on spindlecones truck, it isnt... as its before the passenger cabin, in reality... however most inspection places and cops dont enforce dot laws like that, and will probably leave you alone, most enforcement officials dont even know about that section

right, so mr spindle is a gambler, roll the dice! haha

I guess most side swept Stangs are illegal too, I have seen those for sale at the dealer! shame shame on them :) hahaha

i dont know how they classify the stangs...... i think they run under something else... all sorts of stuff is legal if it came oem (the roush stangs have side exhuast.. )

And the trac is longer. Therefore having more room. And again, I ask, do you have pics underneath the truck. I don't give a damn about the tips.

Exhaust laws are not a federal mandate.
Calif DMV code 27152: The exhaust gases from a motor vehicle shall not be directed to the side of a vehicle between 22 inchs and 11 feet above the ground.
Are plenty of roush stangs and lightnings runnin around kali with side exhaust, not to mention most motor homes.

Something you also might think about is that it might be really really loud inside if you did it.....might be cool at first but it would get old I think. I have mine exiting behind the tires and it is still loud...but not bad with the windows up. I believe Troll used to do the lightning style exhaust and changed it because it was too loud.

I actually love having the rumble, and If I don't feel like it, then i'll turn up my stereo system, four 6"x8" two 10" audiobahn subs 300watts RMS each, a 760 watt Pioneer amp powering 'em and my door tweeters. (Installed everything myself except the amp which i got help from a friend)

I have side exit exhaust <before rear tire> on my 94 sport and it is not that loud.even with a 40 series flowmaster.. but i keep hitting it with rocks and other imovable objects.going to cut the pipe to a turn down for more clearance.also the exaust is routed under the frame and around the spring mount....it was a b#@%h to do.. all the bending and welding.. Ill post a pic tomarrow..

sorry guys i have been away from the comp for a while, the side exit wont fit unless you cut out two of your cats, it fits perfect, i will have pics in the next day or so, as soon as i get all of my programs and pics back onto my comp (my friend downloaded a virus), later
