So my DD right now is currently my R6 (gas prices in michigan are through the roof! and my bike gets 40 mpg!)... so i have been thinking about my truck some more. I would like to make half doors, but i aint about to shoe out $300 on a junkyard set of doors to just cut them up later haha.

So i am tossing the idea around just for fun to take my doors off for the summer (would probably end of June when its stays hot and doesnt rain so much)... What are peoples thoughts? I have read a few other threads and seen some pics but please everyone how has them post your pics!

i am not worried too much about locking stuff down. i plan to use 2x4 in the back scewed into the floor, and a chest/ crate with a lock on it to keep my straps and what not. What you guys think? Worth it??? (i know its a PITA to put back on but if they come off believe me they will stay off for a while).

Anyone ever drove in the rain like this?

so you want beter gas mileage in your explorer so your going to remove doors to save weight? sounds like minimal gain. but if the weight loss happens to outweigh the aerodynamics of this then cheers to you and good luck. you could keep going and take out rear seats, roof rack, spare tire, etc... run with less gas in your vehicle. 21 gallons weighs about 120 pounds give or take.. so run with half of that and your cutting 60 pounds out.

I think he was just saying it not his DD anymore and he's wanting to have some with it by taking off the doors.

I've been contemplating the same thing over most of the winter with my ST. It's not my DD really anymore and just gets driven around town and on trails. The only things I worry about is the loss of the mirrors so safety, and the strength of the cab without the doors adding some rigidity. Also, no more speakers:( I'd be interested to see what it's like without the doors though.

Holy expensive! Doors over here on the west side of the state are $59!

Someone gets me! haha yea my thoughts.

STrunner. Yea i know the whole no speaker things really blows. I have considered the safety aspect too. IF i get hit broadside that is not going to be very fun at all! I would leave the rear hatch on because i think that would REALLY make it less sturdy plus if i ever get groceries which 90% of the time if i drive my truck that is the main reason haha. It is quite amazing just how great a street bike is.

So yes this is NOT to save gas. if i wanted that i would sell it and not have 32's under it. ITs just to be unique and different... you think there would be a way to keep speakers hooked up if i took doors off? Mirrors i dont care about because i dont use them half the time anyways i just look lol. If all else fails my phone has music!

Here's you a writeup, and here's you some pictures :)

Some 2nd gens and a 1st gen... ;)

I say go for it - Not like you're throwing them away or anything.. I've thought about doing the same on mine, and probably will with my new (to me) Ex sport.

The 3/4 door mod on the x's are bad a$$ IMO

Thank you for the pics!!! Yea i think im going to do it... i would love to do a modified door. basically cut half of the bottom and the whole top off and just have about half of the "door" just for a little protection and what not. But like i said i aint about to spend money on some doors.

BUMP...
I think tomorrow i am going to go pick up this set of front doors for $50.00.
I am then obviously going to start hacking away to make some half doors. anyone have any recommendations of the best way to do it? I want to cut out window frame. and then cut some of the bottom of the doors off. Any ideas? i also want to keep the stock hindges/ locking mechanism/ door handles.

Basically an angled loop that looks like an inverted trapezoid from the mirror angled down and towards the back until about 1.5' or so to the bottom then angled back up still going towards the back near the handle. I'd post pictures but I'm on my phone. Try searching for half doors in the search bar and I bet the design I'm talking about will come up. I'm pretty sure there's a show off your custom/half/tube doors thread.

yea i just found an old thread that me and you were chatting on haha.

I think tube doors would be better actually... so i may try and rent/ borrow a tube bender and then just buy some tube maybe? what should i buy? i just dont know how i would do the latch/ hinges

Check out a latch company de-sta-co. They make all kinda of different things and if seen them used on a lot of tube doors. For the hinges, I'd try to simulate the oem hinge and mount that where the door mounts.

Thanks! yea i think tube doors would look a lot better than a cut up set of stock doors. Hopefully i can find someone who wants to make them or can make them.

EDIT- Im going to look around a little today while at work and see if i can find a tube bender to rent. i feel like i can get away without having to weld anything which would be ideal! just get some YJ latches from besttop. screw them to the tubes and ill be good.

If i get around to it i may be able to just head home to my hometown though and use my dads welder.

What DOM tube should i use? 1.25" for the hoop and 1" for the supports seems appropriate suggestions?

Well after 30 min of work and 30 min of driving around I can add my own pictures to this thread. And to answer the original question my though is its awesome lol. I'll get some better pictures later in the day in the sunlight.

Here's 2 doors:

And here's all 4:

I ended up taking all 4 off so I could actually see in my blind spot since there are no mirrors. It was pretty easy, the hardest part was disconnecting the 2 harnesses in the passenger footwell.

Okay so right now i am not a fan of you at all!! THAT LOOKS SICK! i mean honestly idk how it will look on my truck. you definitely have more of a lift that makes it custom. I think a body lift of 3" would really make mine pop. but i also think im going with tube doors (if i can find a bender). Do you think mine will look okay without doors?

This is how it sits now. kind of a crappy pic sorry.

couple questions... what are you doing to secure stuff in the truck? what are you going to do for rain? is this your DD

EDIT- Body lift of 3" hopefully KAZER assists with that... and 2" wheel spacers would make it look ALOT sick on my truck. hmmm now you make me want to do this...

Honestly pulling the doors off is cool until the first time you have to drive it in the rain. Top that off with the fact that anything that is loose in the vehicle is going to fly out if it is not properly secured, you have to worry about people getting into it everywhere you go and you fill the interior with dirt, rocks, mud, tree branches, leaves, ect... weither you are driving it or its parked. If you are going to remove the doors I highly recomend a set of tube doors that cover the entire lower half of the opening (like Jeep cloth 1/2 doors) or just building a set of half doors, you will be much happier with the results.

yea i think i may take them off just for coolness factor and fun for a week or so. but then put some tube doors on
