'99 Explorer Sport 2WD Manual Trans--Difficulty shifting especially in low gears
Have had random difficulty shifting from time to time. Last night it happened again at the end of a trip but managed to get off the road and parked. On return trip, initially could not get into any gear with the engine running but shifted fine with the engine off. Tried to start with the clutch...- fymbscu

Gear Swap - Mesh Pattern Critique
Swapping gears in a Dana Super 50 from 3.73 to 4.10's The pinion is at proper preload, and backlash is correct, but the crush sleeve has not been installed yet. I feel to get the perfect pattern, it should go forward maybe 0.001-0.002 inches, but is it worth the hassle on the front axle?- hondakillah

Supposed to feel transmission shifting?
On my '05 Explorer, when driving and steadily accelerating, I can feel when the transmission shifts from say, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th, etc. How many gears does this thing have to shift to? Are you supposed to feel it shift? It doesn't feel like a clunk, a bang, a grind; nothing like that. I...- MistahYebba

3.55 to 3.73?
Hey everyone, I'm thinking about switching the 3.55 gears in my 4.0 to the 3.73 LS. I've always lost traction when accelerating in the rain, even if I'm light on the gas. I've been through different tires and I still have this problem. I understand that the limited slip will give me better...- 239

Overheating? Gears grinding? Waterpump?
Hey guys, So I have a slight dilemma, last weekend it was pretty hot here in Iowa and I was pulling out some hedge roots with the Ex. :exp: I had 5 to pull out, and everything was going smoothly at first. I pulled the first 3 out with a little jerk in 4-low and it was going good. So I was...- tylerwiseman1992

Any idea what gears I may have in my rear end
I drive a 1999 ford ranger xlt 4x4 it's lifted 3 inches and has 33s on it, when I'm driving at 60mph my rpms run right at 2100, so I looked at the door tag and it said I have 3.73s but I looked at my rear end and my tag is gone, so I believe it has been regeared before I bought it- Missourimuddin98

Tire size change. Help?
Hello, I'm buying new tires soon(currently have coopers and hate them). Anyway I'm going to actually buy some nice all terrain tires this time around. I'm wondering how my MPG/Acceleration will be affected if I go from 28" to 30". Will my truck perform about the same as it does now? I have 3.55...- 239

Explorer Ranger TTB list of useful links
OK, so I am far from an expert on the D35 TTB but every time someone does a thread on modifying theirs I get all excited and start thinking about what to do with my own. No 3rd or 4th Gear on 96 Explorer V8 w/ 4R70W Transmission
The other night I was driving, and the transmission wouldn't go any higher than 2nd gear. When it would "go into" 3rd and id give it gas, it would seem like its in neutral and go back to 2nd. I had to manually switch between 1st ad 2nd gear the way home so it wouldn't go into 3rd or 4th. What...- CamDJClimited

Worthwile informative video tutorial from the 1930s on how a differential works
The good stuff starts at 1:50, but its remarkable how they start with simple tinkertoys and build up a modern differential. A must see if you are not sure how a diff works. Good science project for kids in school too!- 96eb96
