1993 Ford Ranger 2dr xlt
What sort of trouble am I to look for while doing a swap of the 1998 4.0 Explorer engine to the 1993 Ranger auto, 2dr xlt. I am a very old school guy and know very little to nothing of these newer type engine with sensor on everything included the hood latch. I have already purchased the engine and not knowing that one 4.0 may not fit into another 4.0 application . Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have found some numbers around the intake plentum right where the the intake hose from filter housing connects: 98TF- AA 12-22-98 does this give anyone an idea what engine this is......????????

You'll need a combination of existing spacers between fuel rail and intake plenum, 93 upper manifold and all sensors removed, use all sensors and egr from old system. You basically want to strip the 93 down to long block , use cam sensor from 98

Thank you for replying. Let me get this straight, I take evrything from the 93 and put on the 1998 engine I am installing use all the sensors from the 93 engine I am replacing.? Also, I should have said before: The 1998 has the wiring harness on it as yet, and it has a plug for the firewall, the 93 doesnt have that........It's hard getting older !

If you are installing the 98 engine into a 93 , you need all the 93 sensors and harnesses to work with 93 ecm.

98 injectors will not work with 93 harness and ecm. You'll need the 93 injectors also.

If you want to upgrade everything in your 93 to 98, it opens a big ol can o Worms.

Take 98 engine down to the heads (long block)
Dress the engine to be a 93 (all accessories wiring, sensors, manifolds, mounts, covers and intakes)

93 did not have cam sensor or egr
The 98 engine has a cam sensor on the back, just leave it in place no wires go to it

The93 exhaust manifolds will have to be installed on 98 engine

Use 93 oil pan to clear your front suspension

Badically the only thing you will use from 98 is the block and heads and leave cam sensor in place to drive the oil pump.

Very nice upgrade 98 engine much stronger then 93

can i use the crank sensor from the 93?

the 95+ heads i believe are storngrr on ohv

to confirm both are ohv motors? not putting a sohc in the ranger right? sohc is good but needs addl work to make it work, not to mention afaik it wonr worknwith the a4ld or at least youll have a dead tranny snoon enough if its a sohc you need 5r55e not 5r44e either

Every sensor from the 93
Do not use any sensors from the 98

You are only leaving the 98 cam synchronizer/ sensor in the engine because 93 did not have one and it is needed to drive the oil pump

Once again you will only be using the block and heads from the 98 and leave the cam sensor in place

This engine actually has some letters on the valve cover that says OHV Also has this 940 long space 9G944CA and maybe a 1 after the A

I looked again at the block with a wire brush and light, I found these casting numbers on the driver side of the block 26A99

ok then yes it is an ohv. not sure about what the casting numbers are, but to identify years, you could look at the exterior. 95-97 has this front end & tailgate

98 has the same front but this tailgate
F600x600%2Fbe05%2Fbe057fc3a93a469c8973401581c6f19e.jpg

99 looks the same as 98 but has a plastic strip on the bottom of the hatch and this bumper
%2Fuploads%2F1%2F2%2F5%2F0%2F125077787%2F140759445.jpg

there were very very few 2000 ohv made, and there were no appreciable exterior differences with the 00, so no way to ID that

however, the best way is to get the VIN, but exteriors can get you close

Or post a picture of the 98 engine ;)
