Noises problem
1994 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 161 miles

I bought a 1994 Ford explorer for 500 and the body is in good shape but needs alot of repairs.......

1. When going down the road the tires make a loud humming noise when i get up to speed but when i turn a tight left it will stop! The mechanic said i need new upper and lower ball joints and maybe new camber adjuster sleeves. Is he right? I need a pros help!

2. Second of all my low oil pressure gauge always stays low... so am i in need of a new oil pump or oil switch?

3. Third of all when i stop at a sign or light you can hear a small thump. Is that the transmission? If so could i drain it and re fill it and it will be ok? Or is it a sign of it going out like a down shift problem.

So basically im asking the experts if this vehicle is worth fixing... is the engine to bad to be fixed?

Welcome Justin. Wow, would you believe it, we are almost neighbors considering the size of this forum.

If you get a minute, come to Humboldt and I'll help you look it over. I am not real familiar with 1st generation explorers, but I am pretty good with vehicles in general. Don't listen to the other guys when they say I break stuff--:D

Welcome!

You will probably want to replace all 4 ball joints and both tie rod ends then get an alignment to fix problem 1 (It could just be your tires are worn or need balancing)

2.Hows the oil level? Sounds like an oil pump though. Check engine light on?

3. The thump could be your slip yoke needing to be greased. Do a search and you can find out to grease it. It also could be bad sway bar bushings and/or links.

welcome justin

Welcome to this forum! Rotate your tires to see if the noise changes. Sometimes tires develop problems like belt shift where the inner belt moves out of position. Check the oil pressure with a test gauge. It will tell you if your oil pressure is low or if the sending unit is malfunctioning. Check the U joint, and the slip yoke.

You don't have an oil pressure gauge, the sending unit is just a switch. It is just an idiot light that doesn't light up! If someone did actually put a real sending unit in, it would read very low. Switch failure is very common if the needle never moves.

The radius arm bushing can be replaced can be replaced without removing the radius arm. They make quite a clunk. Maybe that is what you hear.
