My 1997 Merc Mountaineer continues to post an EGR code. I am needing to know the location of it to service it. I don't have the means to turn it off so that the CEL will not come on for that particular reason and have considered blocking it off but I have read that this is not necessarily the best thing to do. Pondering...

A quick search yielded this pic

Now I gotta wAtch
Pure curiosity

What is the code?
Do you have an EGR valve specific code?

That first picture is the 96-97.5 GT40 EGR setup with the EGR plumbing inside the upper intake plenum and elbow

The second picture / Video is the 97.5 - 2001 style EGR setup for the GT40p engine, the EGR tube is external from manifold to intake elbow

Usually with the 5.0L and EGR the code is a plugged DPFE, a broken/cracked or missing EGR soft line, or a hole in the external EGR metal tube (p engine).
Rarely do we have a bad EGR valve itself......but it does happen
The actual EGR code usually tells the tale

Can't clean the dpfe sensor
Have to replace it
I was reading about this earlier today

The silicon tubing clogs then clogs the sensor

Kinda sucks

p0401

Mine is like the first picture.
sometimes when I clear the trouble codes it doesn't post again right away. I'm not sure if I am using the correct terms to describe all of this...
another good video:

I think it takes 3 drive cycles to set the code

insufficient flow detected

You likely need a new EGR valve IMO, been through this with the non P head and internal EGR before......

"The EGR valve position sensor in your picture is a simple potentiometer (variable resistor), so you can check it with a multimeter. Observe the resistance between the center and one of the other contacts while slowly moving the pin up and down. The resistance should vary smoothly (if memory serves, from about 100 to about 5000 Ohms). You can do this with the sensor removed, or if you have a hand vacuum pump, by hooking it up to the valve and slowly increasing or releasing the vacuum. Hope this helps."

Here is a good read:
P0401 EGR Flow Insufficient, 5.0 L (FIXT)

I'm assuming that it could be quite a bit of carbon built up in it and a lot of wear on it since the engine has 250K on it. I think I can get a loner vacuum pump from Oreillys in the morning. An old GF use to have one of the handheld pumps, but I can't locate her
:burnout:

Be for I had a vac pump I just put a rubber tube on the egr vac port
And sucked in the hose to move the valve don't take much

So it is a 3 pin double stacked variable resistor type device. I have tested TPS's before using the center pin and one of the outside legs and or the other checking the range on it, so I'm understanding what you are saying about this test. If the metal tube going to it had a hole rotted in it I assume that I would hear an exhaust leak off of the side of the engine...

Thanks for the help y'all. I'll finish checking in out tomorrow and let you know what I find. Thanks again !

Where is the dpfe on 2001 v8?

Not sure I have a six cylinder
But someone will fill u in

You can follow the hoses out of the EGR to the DPFE sensor which is behind the upper intake manifold. If you have ever changed your PCV valve you would scrape your arm on it.

01 DPFE is on the upper intake manifold, on the back side of it behind the throttle body elbow.
There are two 7mm screws that hold the entire DPFE bracket to the intake manifold. Remove those screws and the DPFE, bracket and vacuum switch will all be loose.
I just replaced one of these last week
